The WWE King of the Ring event started in 1985, though it was first shown on pay-per-view in 1993. The tournament has bred many a star, with such winners as Bret and Owen Hart, Randy Savage, Mabel, Triple H, Kurt Angle, Edge, Booker T, and perhaps the most famous, Steve Austin. Steve Austin had the most notable win, in 1996, because it was capped by him giving his Austin 3:16 speech. He had defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts, and this signified the beginning of the Attitude Era. The King of the Ring by itself is a prestigious thing to win, and is quite a feat in itself, but of the winners, only 4 'kings' went on to challenge for the WWF/E Championship at Summerslam, most recently Brock Lesnar in 2002. He was actually awarded a title shot from winning, though is the only one to get such a shot. The tournament has traditionally had 15 or 16 wrestlers, though first had 8 in 1997, when HHH was eventually crowned champ. In 1999, it went back to 16 wrestlers, and in 2000, it had a whopping 32 wrestlers, as Kurt Angle beat the likes of Bradshaw, Bubba Ray Dudley, Chris Jericho, Crash Holly, and Rikishi to win. It returned to 16 the following two years. When it was revived in 2006, Booker T beat Matt Hardy, Kurt Angle(who withdrew with an injury) and Bobby Lashley to win the crown. This year, the tournament has been rather sudden. It was questionable if it would even be held, as the WWE has a rather irregular schedule with the tournament. It was announced this past week on RAW that the tournament would take place on a special 3 hour RAW this upcoming week, April 21, on RAW. While it is uncertain how many wrestlers will be in the event, and uncertain WHO will be in it, here are some possible contenders. Finlay is all but confirmed for this event, as he's listed as a name on WWE.com, along with CM Punk and Mr. Kennedy. Finlay doesn't have a strong chance to win this, however, as he's a little old to be in line for a push. There's not a lot of reason for Finlay to win. Most likely, the WWE will use this tournament to elevate a midcard young guy to main event status, though this isn't always the case. Finlay is too old to push, and doesn't have any real reason to win. The next seemingly confirmed guy is CM Punk, might he become King Punk? He has a pretty strong chance of winning the tournament, probably one of the biggest chances. He recently won the Money in the Bank match at Wrestlemania, and has a title shot in line. It would be a waste for him to use the shot on ECW, so he'll likely be moved to RAW or SmackDown! at the WWE draft, whenever that is. However, the problem with moving him over now is that he has little credibility. He hasn't been a part of any brand other than ECW, which we all know is the 'lesser brand' in the WWE, no matter how much they say it's not. So it would probably be a mistake for Punk to go over to say, RAW, and use the title shot right away. I say RAW because I think it's the most likely brand for Punk to go to. Undertaker is the current champ on SmackDown, and it would seem unlikely that he will lose the belt soon, unless Edge wins it back. It would be odd for the WWE to have a face-face feud over a belt, so it's unlikely Punk would face The Phenom. Thus, it would look like he'll move to RAW, and assuming Orton has the belt for a few more months, Punk could challenge there, and may or may not win. Another thing in Punk's favor is that he and Rey Mysterio seem to be the new faces for the WWE Kids movement, so the two should be in line for pushes and lots of face time in the near future. Punk is a good candidate to win the KOTR because he needs credibility to build him up for a title match in the next year. The next guy who appears to be confirmed on WWE.com is Mr. Kennedy. On WWE.com, it mentions he might become 'King Kennedy' if he wins, which would be a pretty nice title to have. I don't think Kennedy has much chance to win, however. He is currently filming a movie, which, by the way, is the reason he hasn't been on TV for some time, and I don't know for sure, but I'd think he has another month or so of filming. So unless he's pretty much done filming, there's not a lot of reason to bring him back and have him win this. He could use the push though, as he's lost the momentum he had last year, and is good enough to be a low main eventer. The thing is, he can easily be elevated in other ways, so he doesn't necessarily need this. If the WWE wants, they can always revive the Bastard Son storyline, and have Kennedy revealed to be the son of Mr. McMahon after all, and bam!, Kennedy has some momentum. So due to his movie and to the fact that he can get a push in another way, I say he doesn't have a strong chance to win. A few other possible guys that probably have very little chance are HHH, Batista, and HBK. Triple H has already won the title, 11 years ago, plus he hardly needs any momentum, and is already a constant title contender, so there's little chance for him to win, and even less reason for him to. He'd be best used to help push whoever wins, or help push another young wrestler. Batista and Shawn Michaels are likely to face each other, my guess would be in the first round, and I would think they'd probably have some sort of controversial ending, so as to further their feud, perhaps a double elimination. Chris Jericho has never won the King of the Ring, and that's probably the main reason as to why he has a shot to win this one. He could use some momentum, as he hasn't really found a feud to elevate him back to the main event scene yet. However, he's already pretty established, and doesn't really need to win this, as he has plenty of other achievements in his career, though it would be nice to see him win and add another achievement to his nice career. Another guy who is on the same route of Jericho who might be in it would be the Big Show. Big Show had a little momentum from the Mayweather feud, though his momentum is shot now with this Khali feud. There's not much reason to push him, though, since he's a veteran and doesn't really need to be a main eventer, and doesn't need this push. The third to last guy I'm going to mention is Festus. I wouldn't think he'd be in it normally, but when I read the KOTR article on WWE.com I saw a link under 'related content' that led to Festus' page. Though considering the popularity he's been getting, he'd be an interesting champ. I can just see him now, with a crown on his head, looking docile, with a King's robe on. While it would be a funny sight, there's not much reason to push Festus as a singles wrestler. The WWE should give Jesse and Festus the WWE Tag belts, so while Festus might compete, he probably won't win, as he's a tag team wrestler. An interesting thing to note, however, is that in 1999, Mr Ass Billy Gunn won the KOTR tournament, though he was in a tag team. This would appear to mean he would be pushed as a singles wrestler, though it was wasted momentum as the WWF/E inexplicably put him back into his tag team, and his momentum died. Next we have Umaga. Umaga has basically been a jobber for awhile now. They keep acting like he's a monster, and he's used by Regal constantly as kind've a trump card, like he'll say "And you're in a match against.... *devious smile* YOOMANGA!" But when's the last time "YooManga" actually won? Nothing comes to mind. He keeps getting put in matches against bigger name stars, and losing. Wrestlemania 24: Loses to Batista, last week: Lost to Jericho, and the cycle has gone on and on. It's gotten to the point where when he's announced for a match, I immediately give whoever is facing him a 60% chance to win. The KOTR tournament would be helpful for Umaga, as he needs a momentum boost. They could have him beat a couple popular faces to boost his heat with the audience again, and then have him ready to go again. It's been rumored that he might go to SmackDown! and feud with the Undertaker over this summer, and winning KOTR would be a big boost for him, and enough momentum to get him going against The Phenom. I finish with one of the most likely guys to win the KOTR. He's a heel who's been waiting in the midcard for awhile now, and has shown that he can hold his own in feuds with main eventers. The main thing he's been waiting for is a certain Hardy brother to come back from injury. I'm talking, of course, about MVP. It's pretty sad, actually, what's happened with MVP. His feud with Matt Hardy has died down, and lost most of its momentum. It would have been nice to see a Wrestlemania match between the two, but that didn't happen. In the next month or two, Hardy should win the US belt from MVP, and then MVP is free again. A win here at the King of the Ring would do wonders for him. If MVP were to win this event, he would have a large boost of momentum. Being that he's one of the better young guys in the WWE, and should probably be around awhile, I think it'd be safe for the WWE to make him the KOTR. A large chunk of the guys that have won the KOTR are no longer employed by the WWE. Billy Gunn and Kurt Angle, for instance, are now in TNA. But MVP is a guy who fits the WWE. He's a future main eventer, and would greatly benefit from winning the KOTR. If he wins this, then he can drop the US belt to Hardy soon, and still have a bit of momentum left and possibly get into the main event scene. It will be interesting to see if he changes brands in the draft. Whoever wins the KOTR tournament, I'm just glad it's back. I love tournaments, and it's a great way to get a fast boost of momentum for some young guys in the WWE.
