Welcome to the real 6th edition of “Balistik Blabber” and the 3rd episode of our “Ex-WWE Talent Talk”! Again, my apologies go out to fellow articolist Dominic Korgath for not noticing that he had done a report on Gail Kim earlier. I know a lot of you want Jacqueline but she’s being a tease and won’t show up until the next article~ We started this series with 2 of the most popular names in the business… on American soil. Let’s now talk about one of Japan’s best and one of the WWE’s lightweight innovators:
TAKA Michinoku
Born Takao Yoshida, this man took on his stage name as a sign of respect for his mentor, The Great Sasuke, who owns the Michinoku Pro Wrestling company. His technicality combined with high-flying lucha libre maneuvers and martial arts striking set the foundation of what were to become the standard in junior/cruiserweight/light heavyweight divisions for the years to come! Taka’s stint in the WWE began in the early half 1997 and later that same year, he defeated Brian Christopher (GRAND MASTAH SEXAY!) to become the first ever WWF Light Heavyweight Champion. He would keep the title and successfully defend it on his first Wrestlemania against Essa Rios, who was then known as “Aguila”.
Now the sad part: that was probably the limelight of his time in the WWE. Afterwards, he fought against, and eventually rejoined the “Kai En Tai” Faction (he was already part of it back in Japan) until only he and “Smackdown’s No. 1 Announcer” Sho Funaki were the only members left.
Sure there was one time he almost became the heavyweight champion when he challenged Triple H but… *sigh* he was reduced to a mere jobber for the remainder of his time in the company and even turned into a stereotype comic relief. Anyone remember that silly on-the-spot English dubbing translation episode? AARGH!! The memory!! IT BURNNSSS!! Thus, Taka’s journey with the WWE ended on 2002. It was a good thing though, as he needed the time to recover from a major shoulder injury and as the saying goes, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. The saying is true for this lithe ( <-- NO, that’s NOT a typo, look it up) Japanese warrior and he went on to run his own wrestling promotion called “Kaientai Dojo” or “K-DOJO” for short. This company combines the traditional puroresu style with modern high-flying moves and martial arts attacks just as its founder did and is still doing to this day. Not only that, the roster also includes an impressive number of female talents including the amazing Apple Miyuki and Yuu Yamagata. Doubters can do a YouTube search on these ladies and see how much butt they can kick! K-DOJO also has the distinction of actually allowing female roster members to fight members from the male roster! Not only that, they can even challenge for the major championships they have! The only time WWE had that was when Chyna won the Intercontinental belt but it happens here on a daily basis!! Unbelievable! Now, although K-DOJO is a fairly large company, it’s still smaller than the average “big time” promotion, so they sometimes do shows with All Japan, Dragon Gate and of course Michinoku Pro. From being a talented fledgling to a talented promoter who still actively wrestles, TAKA has showed us that anything can be done if you put your mind and heart to it! He’s been around the world, tangoed with the best in the business (including Hayabusa!) and still rocks... even if he does that funny jumping up and down taunt that's forever immortalized in the SVR videogames!!
Thanks for reading, this is Akira Kagami and I will see you all back here for the 4th talent in our ex-WWE superstars list featuring the one and only (and perpetually there?) JACQUELINE!!! You guys wanted her, so I’ve arranged for her to appear in the next episode!! Unless… Other people vote for the next featured star to be another male!! Remember: don’t throw anymore names, just vote MAN or WOMAN!
