HAMMER TYME #13

What makes a match stand out? It is our desire to see if Hulk Hogan can actually slam Andre the Giant or can John Cena get Big Show up for the attitude adjustment.

Is it that we want to watch Randy Orton kick someone’s head off? This week that is the question…..what makes a great match?

My first thought is Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat. We sat on the edge of our seat as near fall got very stressful. It easily could have gone either way. So my first conclusion is excitement. Controversy builds excitement. Early in Hogan vs. Andre there was a 2 count that was it 3 and someone screwed up? Did Stone Cold really top out if he passed out? How is that possible answer me that. This brings up an interesting point and my second thought. OFFICATING of the match is a very important tool in heat building. The referee sometimes finds himself in the center of the action or storyline. There has been twin referee’s that confused things, a heel referee. A heel for a referee, believe it or not it happened. Hold it, Hold it, Hold it, and Hold it!! Hey it’s Fred Flintstone he was the 1st documented cartoon wrestling fan. But Fred’s wrestling used clubs. Hey extreme wrestling got its start? Nah Just a coincidence I think? If anyone knows let us know. Ok extreme wrestling has us glued to the TV. For some reason we love violence and seeing incredible feats of agility and stamina. Shane McMahon corner to corner garbage can drop kick or Jeff Hardy going 20-30 ft up delivering a Swan-Ton are great examples of exciting moves. Watching Mick Foley fall off a cage into a pile of Tacks or a Table is also an example of action. It’s more excitement, action. It brings us back to the old school circus sideshow acts. We make it that way and it sells. It sells so well that it has made millionaires and billionaires.

But what happened to World Championship Wrestling or American Wrestling Association. If that previous statement is true how did they fail? The matches had excitement and action and we bought tickets, merchandise and watched it faithfully. The rumors are many, bad management, loss of key performers, no TV contract or bad air times. Maybe it was a lack of interest. Ted Turner sold his company and walked away. Walking away from some is easier than others. Roddy Piper retired and came back. Hulk has retired and comeback. Speaking of Piper, he said something that is very true. Wrestling is in the blood, we live it everyday. We do it for the fans, we would crawl with one good arm to give the demanded one more match.

Before I gave myself a shout out there was a point to make. The success of a federation is having the big names. Being willing to offer a big payday is what makes or breaks a federation. When a key player reaches a certain level bidding wars get crazy. Hundreds of thousands are offered. Each trying to top the others offer especially if it is a big name and draws a huge faun following. These offers as Vince would say ‘an offer I can’t refuse”.

However don’t pack your bags yet. Unless you’re an established star you are most likely years from that point. There are exceptions. Wrestling schools help you get discovered and work to get you the break. I took the independent circuit and was trained by a promoter/trainer. Whatever road you chose the outcome is the same and be as exciting and give the most and best action possible. It shouldn’t matter if you fight a championship/main event or not. Give the caliber match every night. Push past 100% even 110% if you can. Challenge yourself to better and better.

Stay loyal to your fans, it is them that make or break you. Doing what is good for the show sometimes is not always what is best for the individual. It can lead to reward down the road or ending your career. I was taught that your home organization is your number one priority. Then do for others, it’s courtesy and shows respect. The problem comes with supply and demand. When a contract is up naturally we want or feel we need a raise. Show me the Money!!! That’s where the trouble starts. We get a dollar amount that we feel we deserve and then look to see who will give it to us. The world has changed, it use to be you went to a place and worked until you retired. You didn’t change jobs unless a place went out of business. It is common for that industry to move on to other projects like most soap opera stars have done movies or other projects. A few have even left one show to do another. The core however tend to stay and are kept happy. So I would say happiness is a factor then. You can tell if someone really enjoys what they do by how they do their job. When a group acts as a team and not individuals things run smoother and the end result is a great show. To have a great match you need two people or four if it’s a tag team. The fans nowadays can spot if it’s a performance or not. Giving them what they want is the newest catch phase.

I often criticize the new school wrestling for having too much drama. However looking at this article I see why drama is used in today’s wrestling. It is for adding action and excitement. Backstage attacks, getting jumped before or after a match or even just having a verbal exchange in the ring can create action, excitement and heat.

The old school began with the interview. Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan gave a lot of hype interviews. The built from talking to yelling. They made their point and fired us up. We couldn’t wait for them to hit the ring. Going even farther back I grew up watching Nick Bockwinkle and idolizing him, even wanting to be a champion like him. He had a very unique interview style. He would start off very mild mannered and spoke very elegantly. He used a “silver” tongue. However when he removed his glasses, you knew he had enough or was getting upset and he’s ready to make his point. He might speak louder but never yelled.

Bobby Heenan was a good speaker. He liked to refer to the fans as ham and eggs or speak very witty. He could sarcastically beat almost anyone down. Bobby Heenan also kept the aura of wealth and power. Often teased about being cheap not one to open his wallet very often. In all these men are examples of what it takes to be exciting and creating a reason to tune in. With the brain or Wesel as he was called got us training to see if his latest scam or plan would work and he’d end up managing a champion. We also loved watching our faces manage to get a hand on him. I am going to conclude saying that action and excitement is what has kept wrestling popular and its constant invention to keep fresh and draw new fans a well as retain the old fans. We now treat ourselves with a surprise appearance from Stone Cold or Hulk, some day will older Triple H or John Cena draw that energy. If we hype them now then yes they will be a force in 20 or so years too.

I leave with a suggestion. There has been question of my wrestling background. A few claim I am not real. Next week I will do a write up and show that I have done what I say I have. This should end speculation and show I am who and what I say I am.  Hopefully this will end that conflict. It is very easy in today’s world to say that you are something or have done something. Sitting at a computer you can do or say anything. We are the kind of people who want proof. Our imagination or belief is based on facts and not just credibility of the person writing it. This is fine with me. I actually liked opening the photo file and reliving the memories that it contained. It also made for an interesting revelation. Normally I would open the book look at it and grab the phone asking to do one more match. This time however after looking at it I recalled what my friend Professor Larson said “You had a great run and no reason not to hold your head up high. “ After thinking about that he is right. I have found new opportunities in the sports entertainment business and have a chance to make a difference. To be larger than life sometimes you have to look out side the box. However I can’t say I am not excited thinking one more match. If I get the call it would be hard to say no. Remember there always is the offer you can’t refuse. Till next time

LMFAO!!! Jammin thank you for this article... What started as a article I just glanced at, now is a article I read the comments on... I love how Johnny Blaze states how BORING your article is EVERY WEEK, yet EVERY WEEK HE MUST READ IT... :) Man, if this doesn't give you a good laugh what will? Check it... Instead of defending your articles, make some making fun of your readers... I'd love that... Start off with...

"I'm glad all you haters could spend your time reading my article this week, either you secretly adore my work, or you just have nothing better to do with your lives then compain. This week we will be talking about..."

Man, they would love that... And, if they don't who cares? Because, I would love to see there reactions... Jammin keep up your good work...

People still think that is the real Johnny Blaze? Go in chat every so often and compare the way that he types (grammar, spelling, etc.) to the way this imposter types.

Hey, well i won't put your thing down too much or try cuz it seems alot of people are doing that already.

Some pointers: Keep on track, stick to the main point, back your opinion up, take both sides of the story but don't go off track on some random tangent that has nothing to do with what you originally said you were going to talk about. So keep to the main point

2. Grammer, check your spelling and puncuations. Alot of this doesn't make sense because you forget a comma here or a period there. Its not that you created something horrible, you created the rough sketch, just need to go back and complete the finishing touches.

3. just keep doing what your doing. Pick topics you enjoy, and research things your unfamiliar with

hopefully this helps

That was the worst article I have read here.

Spelling...grammar...half of it doesn't even make sense.

The question for this week was "what makes a good match?" You started off promisingly, talking about Savage v Steamboat, but then just started turning off on every side street you came to. The first real point you make is about the referees! Sure, the officials help, but I can think of at least two people who have more of an impact on whether a match is good or not.

What does the decline of WCW have to do with making a match great? Or whether a wrestler should accept more money? (I think that's what you were talking about)

Build up, rivalries, pacing, selling, spot placement, being able to tell a story in the ring, knowing what move to use when, drawing in the audience, shock value. Those are the sort of things this column should have talked about.

I AM the real Professor Larson, I am NOT dead, and I KNOW the REAL George.

Why I remember back in 1922, me and him worked a tag match against old Karl Gotch and Earnest C. Billywither. Why they were crafty back then, putting their hands down our tights whenever we tied up, ohohoho. Can't say I didn't enjoy it though.

Anyway, the problem with today's wrasslin really lies in the wrasslers. Like you Johnny Blaze. You claim to be some kind of indy superstar but if I was to ask you any for any details about your fellow independent workers, you would have no idea what to say. Because you're a fake. It's all about respect Johnny, I hope one day, you'll learn to respect yourself by telling the truth.

Hmmmm......Well the first thing that makes a great match is great wrestlers. I would say two people that know's eachother's style and can compliment eachother. Like Shawn Michaels and Jericho, or HHH. Those feuds were awesome and held great matches in them.

...You idiots.

First of all, this article is not a pointless recap of a show that you could simply watch, thereby making it 50% more valuable and interesting then most of the crap that is posted here by "writers". Anyone who says it is the worst article on the site needs to look at those absolutely pointless recaps.

Johnny Blaze, you can't say a word to this man because I believe you write one of them. He, by choice of subject alone, is an infinitely better writer than you.

Secondly, everything he has said has meaning and value. I don't think that you could disagree with anything that he has mentioned. Perhaps a little obvious, but in this business we all know how people can go off track easily.

Jack West, come down off your throne you smark. Throw your lingo around so you think you what you're talking about. "Spot placement". HAH! Anyone who knows who has any ACTUAL experience in wrestling, thereby legitimizing their opinion, knows that "spot placement" is total crap. So is the term "Spot." If you are looking at your matches as simple Spot A to Spot B to Spot C formula, you better go back to whoever trained you and get your money back, because you will never make a dent in this business. Just like you Jack. With your superiority complex you will never make a dent in life.

In closing...Go to hell.

Meh, I've accepted that I'm not going to have too much of an impact on the world. I could go out and try to find a cure for cancer but I would rather bask in the anonymity of the internet and abuse below-average columnists.

I never claimed to know exactly what the formula was for a great match, but I do know that it has a lot more to do with the things I listed above than anything that was contained in the article. I was merely stating that as a trained wrestler, this guy should have known to write about those sort of match features instead of whatever he actually said up there.

Also, it's common knowledge that wrestlers plan out several move prior to the match and that they use the term spots to describe these. Spots are the foundation of a match and so are sort of important. Without them you don't have a beginning, you would have a crap middle, and you wouldn't have an end. They probably deserve mentioning in an article about match quality. Come to think of it, no, that should be left out so that we can read about how staying loyal to your fans by rejecting big money makes a good match.

ok, I'm not going to say that George is the best writer I've ever seen. I'm not going to say that I read every single article he writes. What I am going to say however, is that it's kinda going overboard with all of the insulting. He may not have the best grammar and spelling, but he still manages to get his point across. I enjoy some of his articles, I dislike some of his articles, but I click on each "Hammer Tyme" I see. That must say something.

To those that George referred to at the end of the article (doubters that he's a wrestler), who really cares? I mean, I've spoken to George via PM before he became a reporter on multiple occasions. I'll admit that I had my doubts that he was a wrestler, but I still asked him question after question about professional wrestling because I'd like to be a pro wrestler as well. He answered each of my questions and gave me quite a bit of insight into the business, and even gave me a brilliant idea to help me understand match psychology better. As a result, I write my own matches from scratch for all of my PPV's in my federation! It allows for a more realistic match rather than the random moves that TWG offers. He's offered his opinion on some of my early matches (not on TWG), and ultimatly helped me compose more realistic and interesting matches. I can't say that he's definately a wrestler, but I'm not going to say he's not. If you doubt his claims, just keep it to yourself rather than flaming him on every article he writes.

Shameless fed plug: You can see me and an entire roster of entertaining superstars every Thursday and Sunday at 20:00 Game Time! Don't miss it!!

Now I do find Jammin George to be a fake and have boring articles I didnt post ANYTHING in this article because I havent been reading them.. My friend Jack pointed this out to me that someone is on here using my name.. Thats childish and honestly pretty freakin sad..

If there is any doubts of me being an Indy wrestler I couldnt care less.. Im not here to impress ANYONE.. Also for Vinceti, Like I said on my article.. I am employed by the site to write the ECW recap show. I have done a couple opinionated articles for the site both with massive response.. So thats why you only see me doing ECW reports, Its what my job is..

Now regardless of the fact I believe Jammin George could use some spellcheck and could also not try to be so apart of the "business" when he clearly isnt.. But I wouldnt sit here and start a flame war about it..

So whoever is impersonating me? Grow up.. If there is any questions on if im saying something, PM Box is always open...
