Indy'd Indeed: Smackdown Report for 02/26/10

Hello, hello! I’ll be reporting Smackdown this week, but... hopefully only this week. Surely someone will step up to replace me!

We start with Jericho, and he “IS THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION!”. He takes a while to remind us that, repeatedly. He reviews RAW, and says Edge stole his moment. He did not deserve that. And “You think you know me” gets the biggest pop we’ve seen for Edge since he ended Cena’s first title reign. Edge reviews how awesome he is at spearing Jericho. He actually says ‘spear’ so many times, it ceases to sound like a word. In fact, I think he says ‘smear’ and ‘beer’ a couple times. The crowd likes it. They start chanting “Spear!”. Wow. Edge wants Jericho at his best, and it’s funny because Edge being 6’5” really shows here, since he’s leaning in and is still taller than the poised Jericho. Jericho promises that Edge will never spear him again. Not 15 seconds later, he is speared. Edge is Smackdown, man.

11 minutes in and we’re to commercial. So... are we not invoking Undertaker’s rematch clause? Everyone who holds a title for less than a month gets one, why doesn’t the only guy in recent memory to hold the belt for half a calendar year get one? Oh yeah - Wrestlemania is only 30 days away. They really push it when it comes to getting WM matches booked these days, don’t they?

Match 1: MITB Qualifier: John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. R-Truth

As Morrison enters, he’s hyped as being one of the final 3 in the Elimination Chamber. That’s not really impressive sounding, but... well, he’s been nowhere near the belt yet, so I guess I can give him a little credit. Meanwhile, R-Truth gets hype because the guy he’s “mentoring” won on NXT. Now that is a stretch. Ziggler gets no hype? He must be winning.

The 3 size each other up, and Ziggler is out of the ring. Morrison and Truth work together to go after him. After rolling him back in and beating him down with nothing in particular, Ziggler is out. Truth dodges Morrison with an around-the-world and Truth goes for a pin. Ziggler breaks it up. Morrison capitalizes, goes for a pin, and Ziggler breaks it up. Morrison chases Ziggler, but gets lost outside. Ziggler and Truth take it to the ring until Ziggler goes out of the ring, and Truth flies over the ropes with a plancha. Ziggler rolls in, and as Truth tries to follow, Morrison kicks him back out to pin for 2.

And again, we’re back to commercial.

When we return, Ziggler and Truth are in the ring with Ziggler in control. Apparently Morrison was in the match over break and Truth send him into the steel post. Bah. Ziggler hits the sleeper on Truth, minus the body scissors until he falls backward. Morrison is in to break the hold as Truth is passed out. Morrison tries a second-rope springboard, but gets his legs swept. Ziggler hits a couple big moves like a rarely-seen inverted body slam. Both pins get 2. Ziggler gets cocky, and takes a small package for his trouble, but Truth saves the match. Ziggler dropkicks him and gets 2. Scoop slam and 2. Apparently, the counts are getting “close, and closer, and closer”. Ziggler gets cocky again, and this time Truth gives him a  small package. Morrison saves the match. Deja vu. Morrison hits some impact on Ziggler, but gets another small package. Kickout, re-pin, Ziggler involves. Truth goes for a crossbody, but hits Morrison instead of Ziggles. Ziggler is angry. He puts Morrison on the top rope, and then they trade blows, resituating. Truth decides to join and all 3 are up. Ziggler is knocked off and out of the ring. Morrison sunset flip powerbombs Truth. Sweet. Starship Pain connects. 1...2... Ziggler pulls him out of the ring! Ziggler pins Truth instead for the win!

Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Don’t worry, Morrison. You’ll get another chance. You’re my pick to win MITB this year, remember?

Let’s go to commercials. “I Made It” by Kevin Rudolf is the theme for WM26. Woo. Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels is hyped with a pretty killer video package given as the original material has actually been subpar. It’s sad that this story is working so well since I sincerely don’t want them to do it again at Wrestlemania. They should have built this up to HHH vs. HBK. And to be honest, Streak vs. Career is too harsh. It looks great on paper, but I don’t think WWE fans want either to end. Even all you naysayers who don’t like Undertaker and have wanted the streak to end every year, what will you have to complain about come Wrestlemania time?

Match 2: Women’s Championship

Michelle McCool w/ Layla vs. Mickie James and Special Guest Referee Vickie Guerrerro

Apparently, Vickie Guerrerro doesn’t have theme music. I guess we’re just used to hearing “EXCUSE ME”. Random offense until Mickie hits a neckbreaker and Vickie won’t count because she likes Layla. Shenanigans out of the ring, and hey--Beth Phoenix is watching. Woo. Eventually, McCool goes to a powerbomb but gets a hurricanrana instead. More shenanigans and Vickie is knocked out of the ring. Layla decides rubbing Vickie’s bum will make it feel better. McCool checks on the situation and finds herself in a pin. Vickie goes up in the ring and won’t count... she slaps Mickie instead. McCool hits a kick and Mickie is down. Pinned. Lame.

Winner and NEW Champion: Michelle McCool

Y’know, the Elimination Chamber card was pretty skeleton and didn’t have a Diva Match. Dare I ask why they didn’t put this title match on their? Bah. Commercials.

Match 3: MITB Qualifier: Kane vs. Drew McIntyre

Kane makes his ring pyro go off on entrance, so I guess he isn’t winning? And McIntyre’s new music absolutely blows. It’s got too long an introduction, never picks up, and... ah, forget it.

Kane goes straight for McIntyre to show him not to brag. Kane’s only notable offense is a suplex until McIntyre goes outside the ropes and drops Kane with a neckbreaker on ‘em. McIntyre actually delivers a clothesline to take the big man down. McIntyre decides a headlock of sorts... since it’s worked far too well for Ziggler recently... but Kane powers out. Irishwhip, body splash, sidewalk slam, and cover for 2. Kane is in control. He goes up for the clothesline, but McIntyre misses. McIntyre hits a modified Zig-Zag. Even the announcers notice, since they say “Ziggler!”. Ha! Some more back and forth before Drew goes off the ropes and eats a Big Boot. Future Shock try turns into an attempt at a Back-to-Belly Piledriver, but McIntyre rolls through for a sunset flip. No momentum, and now he’s in a bad position. His “streak” is over!

Winner: Kane

McIntyre throws serious fit. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone react that way after their first loss in a long time.

Commercials again as we review Elimination Chamber. I gotta say, Shawn Michaels does such a perfect superkick. You can’t truly appreciate it unless you watch it in slow-motion. And does this mean Batista is on RAW? What, we didn’t learn our lesson the first time having HHH/Orton/Cena/Batista all on the same brand?

And Miz is out. I gotta say, it is truly badass to see ANYONE holding 3 title belts. I don’t even care that 2 of those belts count as 1 championship. He wants Teddy Long to decide a Wrestlemania Tag Team Championship Match for he and Big Show. T-Lo will take it under advisement, but he wants to use Miz for a singles match tonight. Miz accepts, because he ain’ afraid of nobody. T-Lo decides that if he isn’t afraid, then Edge is a perfect opponent for him. Funny. It would have made sense for Undertaker to do it. Taker is pissed right now, right? Taker s the one who usually scares people who aren’t scared, right? Let’s go to commercial.

I wish WWE would do a stupid movie like that one WCW did with David Arquette while they still have guys like HHH, HBK, and Undertaker in the business. I realize it was a desperate cry by WCW for ratings, but who would you rather see do it, WWE or TNA? Yeah.

Match 4: MITB Qualifier: CM Punk w/ Straight Edge Society vs. Shelton Benjamin

Well, Punk has won this thing twice and isn’t near the spot-monkey Shelton is. I’m wagering Shelton wins, so Punk can do new things.

The two lock up, but Benjamin is repulsed by Punk’s chest hair and gets backed into a corner trying to avoid touching it. He fails. Still not wanting to touch it, he goes for kicks and punches until Punk rolls out to play with his friends. Shelton eats the ropes and Punk flies in. Cover doesn’t even get 1. Strong irish whip from Punk for a 2. A bad headlock by Punk gets fought out of, but Punk does a nice little reversal before using his legs to try to submit Shelton’s golden hair. Shelton stands up and Punk flees his shoulders as we go to a back and forth. Shelton comes out on top after flying off the top rope from an irish whip until a Muay Thai kick from Punk gets a 2. High knee in the corner, but the bulldog is pushed off. Gallows distracts as Punk goes for the GTS, but Mysterio sweeps Gallow’s legs. Punk lets Shelton go and Pay Dirt connects for the win!

Winner: Shelton Benjamin

Yep. They really are going to do the Punk vs. Mysterio thing at Wrestlemania. Wow. Rey will be facing someone in his weight class. Ha!

We go to commercials... and Morrison’s new DVD is hyped. Pro-wrestling, parkour, surfing... no wonder he has such a great physique. Anyway, the RAW Rebound we see how Cena is finally getting his rivalry with the McMahons. It only took a replay of his bad luck post-Elimination Chamber. Why couldn’t Batista have been this heel-deadly on Smackdown? Undertaker vs. Batista at the Royal Rumble would have been a far better match for it.

We recap the top-3 matches of Wrestlemania and it’s time for the main event!

Match 5: Edge vs. The Miz

We get entrances, and... more commercials. Woo.

We’re back for the bell ring and the two lock up. They break and stare, then lock up again. Almost a clean break, but Miz takes a swing. Again, they lock up and Edge gets the better of it twice, the second time with a beautiful bridging suplex. Edge gets Miz in a headlock before getting bounced off the ropes to hit a shoulderblock. Another lockup and Edge is forced to roll out. Miz baseball slides out, but Edge slides in. Edge goes back out and slams Miz into the barricade and into the ring. Miz ends up in the corner and Edge goes for a body splash, only to have Miz raise his boot, but Edge slides under and out. He goes back in the ring and gets whacked against the steel post, taking him out again and us to commercials. Joy.

We’re back, and Miz has Edge almost out with a headlock in the center of the ring. Miz lets go and gets an “awesome” kick to the face of Edge. He tries to choke Edge on the ropes and takes another kick before some punches and kicks in the corner. Lame. Flying clothesline into the corner, and Miz goes up top! Double Axe Handle, but Edge hits a stunning Flapjack instead! Russian leg sweep by Edge and Miz’s rookie is watching. Is it sad I respect the rookie more than the superstar? Edge hits a huge boot and the two run around for a bit before an Edge-o-Matic. Miz counters some offense into a pretty sweet backbreaker/inverted DDT combo. Miz stalks Edge, but gets countered into an Impaler. Bam! SPEAR! Bam! Win!

Winner: Edge

What, no Chris Jericho interference? Poor Miz. He has the belts and still can’t win a Main Event match. Even as an “A-Show Star” on the “B-Show”. Edge celebrates as the show ends.

Not a bad show. Can’t complain. 5 decent matches and some decent plot advancement. Pretty on-par given the big show RAW looked like. Still, with Rey/Punk in the undercard, Undertaker disappeared, and Batista gone, the Main Event scene is looking bare. Meh. To Wrestlemania with us!

The Miz is more alike upper midcard. He's greatly improved so I suspect he'll become a main eventer by the next 2 years.

I think if they dont even have a special match at WM it's not going to be worth watching... Like a hell in a cell... sub match... or rivarly between R-truth and Morrison ending in a cage match at WM or at least a Triple Threat Main Event..

#4: Really. You just HAVE to impersonate Mr. McMahon. We all know he wouldn't cancel "Wrestlemanian" 26. Its where they make some money. That is where their advertising goes. Yeah, and he probly wouldn't use a run-on sentance, either.
