Money In The Bank At Wrestlemania

Back to home

Wrestlemania 24: Money in the Bank Possibilities

The Money in the Bank match is one of the brilliant things thought up by the WWE in the last few years. The first match was in 2005, and it's become an annual thing at Wrestlemania. The matches have become classic, and have become fan favorites. Winning the match does a lot for a career, and is a big push for a young wrestler. It's a great way for the WWE to push a guy who doesn't need an immediate push, but should be good enough to get a title shot in the next year.

Each Money in the Bank match has been great to watch. The first one, at Wrestlemania 21 had Kane, Christian, Edge, Shelton Benjamin, Chris Jericho, and the late Chris Benoit. The match was fun to watch, and fans got into it pretty well, backing Benoit. One of the things about this one was when Kane entered, everyone started going after him, and he was sandwiched between two ladders later on. Jericho and Christian were pretty much non-existant in the match. Shelton Benjamin had a sick move where he ran up a ladder to attack one of the other guys. Chris Benoit got busted up and when everyone else was down and seemingly out, he started climbing the ladder to the cheers of the crowd. He inched toward the top before out of nowhere Edge appeared. Edge had been fairly non-existant in the match up until the end. He jumped up and hit Benoit with a chair, then climbed up the ladder and grabbed the suitcase, winning the match.

At Wrestlemania 22, Shelton Benjamin returned and took on Rob Van Dam, Ric Flair, Matt Hardy, Bobby Lashley, and Finlay. Benjamin at the time was the Intercontinental Champion. Oh, how he has fallen. It's sad really, he's the most athletic guy in the company and fun to watch, but he's way under-utilized. Rob Van Dam got probably the biggest pop entering the ring at this match. The crowd was behind RVD early, and throughout. Shelton Benjamin had another moment where he ran up the ladder and flipped out of the ring knocking down 3 wrestlers outside the ring. Ric Flair gets injured when Matt Hardy suplexes him off the top of the ladder, though comes back a little later on. Benjamin had another great move where he flipped over the ladder and almost powerbombed Lashley, but it took Finlay and Hardy to come over to take Lashley down. Flair climbs the ladder and almost gets the briefcase and gets some noise from the audience before Finlay hits him with the shillelagh. As Benjamin and Finlay go at it on top the ladder, Lashley comes over and knocks the ladder over and power slams Benjamin. As Lashley climbs, Rob Van Dam comes flying over the top rope and kicks a chair into Lashley. Benjamin leapfrogs off the top rope to stop RVD from his first attempt, but as Benjamin and Hardy fought on another ladder, RVD knocked it over and got the briefcase to win.

Edge, Matt Hardy and Finlay returned to the Money In the Bank match in 2007 at Wrestlemania 23. They fought against CM Punk, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, Mr. Kennedy, and King Booker, in the largest MITB match yet. Everyone got a good pop from the audience except Booker and Finlay. Edge showed how much of an Ultimate Opportunist he was in this match early on, when Finlay jumped off the top turnbuckle and took everyone down, and Edge raced up the ladder, almost getting to the briefcase before stopped by Matt Hardy. One of the best parts of the match came when King Booker decided to do his awesome Spin-a-rooni. The Hardys worked together for a good part of the match, though they met at the top of a ladder fighting for the briefcase before Finlay pushed the ladder over. Edge got about half a dozen spears in a row before Punk jumped over him and Edge went into a turnbuckle, though Edge speared him shortly after. A massive moment in ladder history happened shortly after when Jeff Hardy jumped 20 feet, landing on Edge, both going THROUGH a ladder. One of the craziest high flying highlights in recent history. Orton RKO'd Matt Hardy, Finlay and Mr. Kennedy in quick succession, but Punk stopped his ladder climb. Edge is taken to the back on a stretcher as Orton RKOs Punk off a ladder. Booker is put in a decision to either help his wife who Matt Hardy had around the neck, or win the match, and he chose his wife. Finlay, who's hair was half blonde half red with blood, does a Celtic Cross with Matt onto a ladder. Hornswoggle enters the match and climbs the ladder hoping to win it for Finlay, but Kennedy does a Fireman Carry off the ladder to take him out. Kennedy knocks Punk off a ladder and climbs up himself to win this match.

One thing to note is that all 3 contracts inside the briefcases have been used to win a belt. The first one that Edge won was used in early 06 as Edge surprised people by winning the WWE Heavyweight Championship from John Cena just after New Year's Revolution. Rob Van Dam also beat John Cena to win the WWE Heavyweight Championship after his victory. And Kennedy lost his briefcase to Edge when he got injured, and Edge beat The Undertaker with his contract when Taker got injured. So it would appear that whoever wins Wrestlemania 24's match will win a belt at some point in the next year. Personally, I prefer it when they wait awhile to use the match, when they wait until say, summer or so. Just after Wrestlemania is pointless for the WWE to use it, since there's still hype and publicity from WM. Later on in the year starting with SummerSlam you have all the big pay per views, so the best time to use it in my opinion would be around the time of the Great American Bash, in the middle of all the big PPVs.

The next question is who would be the best fits to fight in this year's MITB match. From ECW, there are pretty much just 2 options. Shelton Benjamin coming back would be good, and the other option would be either Chavo Guerrero or CM Punk. It's fairly likely that Punk will win the ECW Championship belt back at No Way Out, so unless they're in the undercard for WM 24, the loser(Chavo) could well be in this match. There's a small chance Elijah Burke gets a shot, or possibly Kofi Kingston, but Kingston's a little too new still, and Elijah has no push or momentum behind him. Another choice could be Carlito, he seems like the kind of guy that could be thrown in this. MVP and Matt Hardy won't be in it as they're probably going to have their match at WM. Jeff Hardy could be in it, if he has nothing else to do. Mr. Kennedy could return. He would be a favorite to win, since he missed his push last time due to injury, they could have the push go through this time. When he first came to Raw, his thing was getting a shot at the WWE Heavyweight Championship, and he could get it through the MITB. Chuck Palumbo and/or Jamie Noble could even get nice push into this match. Cody Rhodes could perhaps get a chance too, they could throw him in there. Lance Cade could be a surprise in there, he could use a push. Finlay won't be an option since he'll be likely facing Mr. McMahon. The Major Bro- er, Zack Ryder or Curt Hawkins could be put in this to push Edge's stable.

Whoever the competitors are, they have a lot to measure up to, as each MITB match has been great, and the expectations are up there again for this year. My personal(dream) picks for an 8 man match would be Randy Orton, Mr. Kennedy, Shelton Benjamin, Jeff Hardy, Edge, Jimmy Wang Yang, Chris Jericho, and Rey Mysterio. High Flyers are the best fit for this type of match, but its main purpose is to push younger guys up into a main event scene. I'm sure whoever the WWE picks will be able to put on a sufficient performance.

Dark horse.. but.. John Morrison. Has kind of fallen from view since his return but that would be a great time for him to get another push.
I think the writer might have a point with CM Punk.. but boy do I hope he's wrong.

There is a 90% chance that the Money in the Bank winner will be either Jeff Hardy or Mr. Kennedy. Between those two, I'd lean towards Hardy.

Also, there's no way Batista is even in this match, I'm betting they pit him in an interpromotional feud with whichever RAW main eventer doesn't make the main event, whether that be Orton, Cena, or Hardy.

That's absolutely impossible because there is Randy Orton and Edge as the champions, and they will NOT lose their titles before Wrestlemania.

Posted by blah on Thursday, February 21, 2008

well I think edge should have won the last instead of mr kennedy. its just that he got injured so they mafe kennedy win it... I think the writers wanted to give efge the same undefeated wrestlemania streak so it will look bigger when he faces the undetaker at mania. look at the preview in wwe.com, they are tring to make it big saying edge was never defeated in wrestlemania and his only loss was because of the injury... now instead of streak vs streak, winner gets the gold hype, it is now downgraded because he cant continue last year to win it... the hype is gone in the wind

why else would kennedy say he wanted to wait and win the gold at the next wrestlemania? they made kennedy do that so edge can take it back... kennedy with an injury or not. just made edge look more opportunistic which is exactly his gimmick. the briefcase was really for kennedy to cash in.

only 2 contestants so far, so cant make a guess yet, but both hardy and kennedy could become potential winners because of their current storyline, agenda... but i have a feeling that a smackdown representative will go on top here. just a feeling though nothing solid.

i tell you i wont be suprised to see great khali in there so that they will have someone to do their crazy stunts there and here jerry lawler or whoever the commentator is say that khali doesnt even need the ladder to get the belt. they could use him as someone who will put guys over. him or the other big guys, wont make any difference.
I can here it now, they wil be talking if the ladder can even support their weight when they are climbing. or they vould make a "weak" ladder so it is "destroyed" while whoever "big mac" is climbing.

During the March 3 edition of RAW, Jeff Hardy appeared on Chris Jericho's "Highlight Reel" segment as a special guest, but ended up delivering a Twist of Fate to Jericho.[102] This led to an Intercontinental title match on the following RAW where Jeff would drop the title to Jericho, ending his fourth Intercontinental title reign.[103] However, he wouldn't get a chance to challenge for the belt again, as on March 11, Jeff was suspended for sixty days following his second violation of the company's Wellness Policy.[4] Hardy was also removed from the fourth annual Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXIV after the suspension was announced

On March 15, 2008, it was reported that Jeff Hardy's house had burned to the ground in a fire.[116][117] Hardy and his girlfriend were not home at the time, but his dog was killed in the fire.
