Straight Blazing: ECW Report for 05/19/09

Sthwagga is Thpeshul

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to Straight Blazin! Coming off of a quite disappointing Judgment Day and heading into another PPV in a matter of weeks, There is lots to keep up on. First off I wanted to go over Judgment Day and what I thought about it real quick. Also remember that Extreme Rules is right around the corner so we are destined to see mainly rematches from Judgment Day on that card.

CM Punk v Umaga

I missed the very beginning of this match but it went longer than I thought it would because I caught most of it getting to see it around 8:15 eastern time. I thought they should have the hometown hero win.. But that’s just my opinion I guess. I had said last time that I thought Umaga would win but really was rooting for Punk. The fact they let Umaga get a clean win I was very surprised with. Look for their match at Extreme Rules to be very bland in my opinion

Christin v Swagga

This is the match I was looking forward to the most since I’ve been covering ECW for months now. I thought this match delivered nicely as all their matches seem to. Thought the match was a very nice back and forth contest. When Swagga countered the Kill Switch and almost hit the gut wrench I thought we were gonna see them play hot potato with the belt. But Christian rolled up Swagga for the 3 count and they delivered a good match.

Shelton Benjamin w/ Charlie Haas v John Morrison

It is good to see The Worlds Greatest Tag Team back together even if just helping each other out for now. Morrison is getting a massive baby face push and it makes sense to stack the odds against him in this match. Haas went for interference late in the match and I was surprised to see Morrison take care of him and then actually win the match. Nice athletic showing from both wrestlers. Nice match that had no meaning to it, but still a good filler match.

Rey Mysterio v Chris Jericho

I wasn’t too pleased with this match as I thought Jericho was performing a little less than his best. I don’t find Rey Mysterio to be a good talent, but that’s a topic for another article. I just wasn’t pleased with this match nor was I pleased with Rey keeping the IC title for longer. Im not a huge fan of that counter into the 619 thing and that’s what ended the match. Not a horrible match but nothing spectacular.

Batista v Orton

The main event match for Raw, Decent little match that had a faux ending which aggravated me but helped the feud. Orton slapping the ref and being DQ’d has happened before and I just thought they could have went with something better then that. Seeing Flair back was a mark out moment though after the match.

Cena v Show

Thought this match ran a little longer than I would have liked, though it was a good match, I have seen this before. This is the third time they have feuded so I have seen this matchup too much. The ending was nice, the attempted choke slam reversed into the Attitude Adjustment was a nice spot. Cena wins and the feud continues!

Hardy v Edge

I really thought this was when they were going to give the title back to Hardy, Or have Edge retain then have CM Punk cash in.. But Edge gets a clean win over Hardy more or less. Matt Hardy interferes and nails Hardy with his cast on the outside when the ref wasn’t looking. Kinda odd because it is well known that Edge wants some time off to rest an injury and Jeff Hardy has yet to resign a contract which makes WWE nervous. So we will have to see what happens

On another note from the PPV. The Miz cut a hell of a promo calling out Cena and punking out the whole crowd and the city of Chicago. He then proceeded to rip on Alfonso Soriano who was sitting in the front row and went as far as to call him into the ring. Miz is doing a wonderful job with this heel push hes getting and I look forward to more from him in the future.

Now onto ECW! We kick off the show by seeing Mr. Jack Sthwagga sitting in the middle of the ring on a chair. He talks about how hes not leaving the ring until he gets what he wants. Two refs come out to tell him to leave the ring and he states “If the blonde wants me out of the ring she can come out and do it herself” and this of course prompts Tiffany to come out to the ring. She tells swagga he is acting like a child and that he needs to leave the ring.  She says to meet her backstage and introduces Christian to the ring to have his match. Going up the ramp the two face off at the top and Swagga pushes Christian off the ramp and he lands on the ground beside and “hurt his ankle”. Swagga walks to the back and we go to commercial.

Come back from commercial and we have Paul Burchill v Christian. The match was a very decent back and forth match with Christian selling the leg injury a bit and Burchill focusing on that. I was kinda disappointed that the champ had the first match of the night and it wasn’t even a long match. Christian picks up the win when he hit’s the KillSwitch and picks up a clean victory over Burchill. Im not sure what they are doing with Burchill but having him lose every week is getting a bit old. Christian gets a great pop from the crowd.

Match Rating: 2/5

After the match Christian gets on the mic and talks for a bit and challenges Tommy Dreamer to an ECW title match at Extreme Rules. Then we go to the back area where we see Tiffany and Swagga talking. She tells him he can have the night off. Swagga doesn’t seem pleased but leaves the lockerroom and we get another commercial break!

Come back and we have the new and improved Zach Ryder versus some random jobber. Not much to say about this match because I wasn’t really impressed with Ryders performance and don’t know how much of a push he is going to get. It was a standard squash match and it ended with his finisher which I didn’t catch a name of, If there is one, and it was a mediocre filler squash match. Nothing special but it did take up a few minutes and thank god it wasn’t another Koslov squash.

Match Rating: Wth?/5

They show DH Smith in the back talking to Natalya and TJ Wilson and DH Smith says how he is better then his father ever was and they cut a very good heel promo. Natalya says good luck to DH Smith in his match tonight.  Then we get a promo from Vladimir Koslov. He says in broken English that he will continue his march through ECW and continue to be the best. He is dressed in a Russian Military uniform and the promo was pretty decent for what it was.

We go to Gregory Helms before a commercial break and he says that Christian will face Tommy Dreamer on WWE superstars on Thursday. Then off to commercials!

Back with the Main Event, Now there was a commercial break in this match as it lasted a good half hour, But Im just gonna cover the match as if that wasn’t there. This match was pure AWESOME. DH Smith showing why if he never would have messed up being brought to the main roster before, he would be a huge star. Finlay, being the true veteran he is, also helped in making DH Smith look like a million bucks. This match was a technical masterpiece and there was A LOT of submission holds and technical wrestling. The match did an amazing job of solidifying DH Smith as a good talent and to also further the new Hart Foundation against veterans like Finlay. The match sadly ended with a cheap shot from Natalya’s shoe to Finlay and allowed DH Smith to pick up the win. DH Smith showed that he might truly be better than his father, the late and great British Bulldog. What an amazing way to end the show that was!

Match Rating: 5/5

The overall show did a decent job of tying in the main ECW Title storyline to the next PPV. As well as we seen an amazing wrestling match from one of the best young guys in the game and one of the best veterans in the game. Throw in a splash of Russian promo and a wee bit of Swagga crying, It made for a good ECW. Not bad at all.

Always remember to STAY BLAZIN!

I am glad to DH back on the screen. Bad break before but this time it looks like he definitely learned from his mistakes and Finlay did a hell of a job as well.
