Straight Blazing: ECW Report for 08/04/09

Back to home

Snuggy Says: Theres Only ONE Person Cooler Then Chuck Norris... Goldust..

Welcome back Ladies and Gentlemen to this edition of Snuggys Synopsis! I know the constant name change directions might have you going around in circles.. But no need! it’s the same Straight Blazin with a bit of a twist. This week we will be covering the ECW episode of August 4th 2009. It was looking to be exciting with the main matchup being Tommy Dreamer getting his last shot at the ECW title in an Extreme Rules match against Christian. Heres hoping they give it more then 10 minutes then!

Before we get into the review of the show I wanted to state how my opinion of ECW has changed since taking this reporter job and watching a whole lot more ECW. When I first started watching again a lot I had to admit I wasn’t too thrilled with the roster they had and the shows they were putting on. I was never a big fan of the Old ECW and I view it as something that was horrible and way overhyped, not to say it wasn’t popular or plenty DIDN’T like it. I just never really did. I went to several old ECW shows and almost had my first Pro Wrestling tryout with them before they folded.. So I do respect what the old ECW did for the business.

On to the NEW ECW and what I thought. When I first took the reporting job I was very skeptical on what was going to happen. They were doing 2 matches a night with a bunch of crappy promos and really had no one interesting to speak of. Then its like I was granted a wonderful thing when Christian returned, Jack Swagger started stepping up, and we got The Hart Dynasty. Wrestling was awesome at this time with plenty of good matches and excellent talent.. Then when they had the “second” draft more or less, They KILLED ECW. They took the best people except for Dreamer and gave the brand Goldust and William Regal.. Now Goldust has been proving to be a hell of a talent for RCW.. But besides that the show has been very iffy lately.

Its good that talent like Zach Ryder and Sheamus are being pushed and stepping up to the plate to try and help lead ECW. Paul Burchill also is doing a good job in the jobber role and putting people over. Goldust is at the top of his game, and Christian is running on all cylinders and is looking impressive. So I think after the little speed bump, we now have some solid feuds with Kozlov/Ezekial, Christian/Dreamer, Goldust/Anyone that we can actually have a good ECW again.. Now ON WITH THE SHOW!!!

The hype of course is right away for the ECW Championship match and Josh Matthews seems a little too excited for it. But a good hype little intro for it before the music video plays where we can see Kozlov about 10 times along with Christian. We are kicking the show off with The Abraham Washington show.. I am SOO tempted to turn the channel right now.. But I wont.. Ill stick it out for the sake of all of you..

Now on with this crappy segment that they are still running for whatever reasons.. He proceeds to disrespect the city of Long Island where they are at, which happens to be Tommy Dreamers hometown more or less. He goes on to say that he has offered an opportunity for Sarah Palin to come onto the show and as he is talking he is interrupted by Zach Ryder who gets a decent pop for interrupting this horrible host. Abraham asks him what hes doing on his show and mispronounces his name. Apparently this is Zach Ryders hometown as well so he is playing that up. He says his Woo Woo Woo and the crowd finishes it for him.

He goes on to get a half decent reaction from the crowd, Abraham interrupts him and claims he got his furniture from Rent A Center and continues to try and be funny and just falls right on his face.  Then the two go on to bash Shelton Benjamin.. And of course this leads to Shelton coming out to defend himself and he doesn’t look too happy. This also could be leading to a Shelton face turn.

Shelton proceeds to make jokes at Zach Ryder and Abraham Washington.. He STEALS ONE OF MY LINES and uses the word smurf as the adjective for everything. He tells them to go Smurf themselves and says the show is a pile of smurf.. He then tells him to shut the Smurf up when Washington goes to retort back. Shelton then makes fun of Ryders girlfriend and the two get in each others faces… Apparently we are going to have “Abraham Idol” and the crowd will pick the best singer out of the two..

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????

They sing Hootie and the Blowfish and Zach Ryder forgets the words to the song he picks.. *sighs* Then Shelton atleast remembers the song and sings to the displeasure of the crowd. As he is finishing Zach Ryder attacks him and says his catchphrase. Shelton then gets up and attacks him back and gets the last punch in. Setting up a feud between the two.. But I will NEVER get those 10 minutes back.. It was funny to hear Stryker go “What The Smurf?”

After that commercial break we see the impressive looking Ezekial Jackson. He is out to take on the AMAZING local jobber wonder Danny Danger! Seriously Ezekial is about to smash this 150lb weakling into the ground. So two backbreakers later.. A kick to the ribs.. And the modified Chokeslam.. And that would be the first match of the night in the books.. Expect an appearance from Vladimir Kozlov of course, but we see a replay of the destruction in the mean time

0/5

Match Review:

BOOOOO

Of course Kozlovs music hits over the speakers and out walks the impressive looking Russian and makes a B-Line to the ring as he has the last couple weeks. The two stare off a little more this time before Kozlov picks up the jobber and slams the guy down with the Iron Curtain and stares at Jackson again. Ezekial picks up and lays the guy out AGAIN and exit’s the ring leaving Kozlov standing there staring after him.

After this we see the Bella Twins backstage talking to Tiffany who for some reason is by the production trucks. She is talking to a stage hand as all of a sudden the stage hand is yelling as a truck begins to come backwards towards her and no one is there to stop it. All of a sudden Hurricane Helms is there stopping the truck in its tracks and saving the day! Tiffany comes running over and asks what happens as the camera pans to Paul Burchill standing there looking at the scene and he shakes his head and looks at the camera and says “This is ridiculous” and walks off disgusted. It seemed the last couple times Burchill was being interviewed when something happened.. So this could be a good feud from Hurricane Helms and Paul Burchill me thinks.

Commercial break again…

We are back and we see Sheamus, with his kick ass music, coming down to the ring for competition. Sheamus is hyped well by Stryker and Matthews.. Then..

A SHATTERED DREAMS PRODUCTION!!!

That’s right.. it’s the weekly mark out moment for me as Goldust comes out looking ALL business. The match these two had last week was a solid contest and I hope this week is just as good. Goldust looks ready to go and we will see if he looks as good this week as he has in previous weeks.

The match itself was a very good back and forth contest which showed Goldust still at the top of his game and really helping carry Sheamus. Both looked well and it was Sheamus that got the last word in and picked up the victory over Goldust in a solid 5 minute match!

Match Rating:

2/5

Match Review:

Too short.. Not very bad though

After the match Sheamus gets on the mic and starts to insult Goldust and saying about how he beat him twice and he wants some competition. Goldust then gets out of the ring and attacks Sheamus whipping his ass! Security comes out and breaks them up leaving Goldust screaming “Come On Sheamus” leaving these two set up for a feud it would seem.. Good job setting up future plans on this ECW tonight..

Commercial Break again

Smackdown Recap: CM Punk as Heel is EPIC EPIC EPIC WIN! I think he was one of the best heels ever in Ring of Honor and he will do great as a heel champ on Smackdown!

Back from that and we have an interview with Tommy Dreamer about what he thinks will happen. Of course Dreamer says its his rules and his time to grab what is his. And typical promo saying he will win and etc. They then show Christian carrying.. Wait for it… A car door.. Lol.. And he is headed to the ring with said car door and the main event match is next!

Main event is next and Tommy Dreamer is coming down the ring with a Hot Dog cart.. A waterdog cart from New York.. EPIC! Christian comes down with his car door and the two stand off in the ring for the announcement of their names. Little offense is put in before we are at a commercial break.. AGAIN..

Back from commercial.. I will go over the notable spots from the last 5 minutes of this match..

-Trashcan lid shot to the head of Dreamer while he was running
-Slam onto the trashcan after that.
-Multiple Kendo stick strikes to Dreamer by Christian
-Dropkick off crowd barrier into trashcan positioned at Dreamers face after Dreamer threw him into the crowd
-Christian thrown into trashcan set up in corner after being reversed
-Pump Handle Throw with Kendo stick onto Christian
-Tornado DDT off top rope reversed as Dreamer throws Christian ONTO a trashcan
-Trashcan Lid smash to Christian while he was set up in Tree of Woe.. Trashcan set over his face as Tommy Dreamer performs the OLD SCHOOL Tree of Woe with a crutch
-Christian charges with the car door, Dreamer smacks him through open window with trashcan lid
-Dreamer attempts piledriver on car door, Reversed into the KillSwitch

Christian then proceeds to pins Dreamer WITH the Car Door and retains his ECW title!

Match Rating:

4/5

Match Review:

It was a decent Extreme Rules match and it served its purpose. Worthy of the rating if for only the amount of spots and the ability to keep you interested. Car Doors FTW!

Show Grade:

C+

Not a great show.. But it wasn’t their worst ever.. Two very short matches and one that was only like 12 minutes leaves me wondering where the action was? Stay Blaz.. err.. Stay Snuggin!

You forgot to mention when Dreamer smashed Christian into the hot dog cart, then a couple of the utensils from it and then of all things....he took out a hot dog, took a bite, then shoved the rest into Christian's face! That was a hilight worth mentioning.

Look this is all terrific, but I have to say that the WWE is becoming weak. Ever since Linda banned blood loss WWE has been losing veiwers to the current better brand in my opinion TNA. Many WWE fanatics hate admitting this but TNA has better talent, better announcers, better storylines, and better matches. If you look at ratings each week you will see TNA is not rising. The only reason why WWE is survivng is because they have the classic WWE moment's coattails to ride. If you ask me this is a load of bull. Don't get me wrong Hulk Body Slamming Andre was awesome but that was Wrestlemania 3. Unless my math is incorrect we are aproaching Wrestlemania 26. Look everyone reading this if you want quality matches to watch and incredible talent wrestling, tune in to TNA 9:00 PM Thursday nights on Spike TV.

All I want is more than 2 matches on ECW each week. No More Promoes on ECW. And EVERY!! ECW title match to be the old EXTREME Rulez Format.

Lol...I just read on a website that the crowd was chanting "This is stupid" during the Abraham Washington segment. It was edited out though.

Goldust is great, sure... but you tread on dangerous ground. Chuck Norris may be watching.

You fail for saying better storylines and better announcers. You had me up until that point. Really you did. Then you lost ALL credibility. WWE has its flaws, but it is still, for better or worse, the standard in Wrestling entertainment. TNA is good, but the second they even remotely sniff at being competition for the WWE, Vince will throw money at them until they go away, or become his wednesday night show.

A. Washington Show = Auto-Mega-Fail. Like the author I was seriously about to change the channel. I'm interested in seeing if ratings dropped at the beginning of the show.

Yet another Jobber match = Double Fail.

Helms as Superhero = Triple & Auto-Fail. Again about to change the channel then Burhill pops in and says 'This is ridiculous.' Yes! At last! Someone feels our pain at ECW creative!

Goldust match = Goldust 3 shows in a row is pure, well GOLD! Match was ok but Goldust punking that ghostly skinned Seamus at the end was worth it. Anyone else not liking this boring as hell Seamus gimmick?

Extreme Match = Entertaining if not feeling somewhat scripted. And everyone knew Christian was going to reverse a killswitch onto that car door. This match barely saves the show after that AWFUL 30 minute start and only 2 real matches. Gad. And I had such great hopes for this show after the last two good weeks. I'm very disappointed ECW didn't build on the past couple of weeks good shows.

Keep up the terrific work on the articles! It does the ECW fans a great service.

Heel Punk honestly bothers me. The "I dontz do da drugz and all u fans do" is almost as annoying as Chris Jericho calling the fants hypocrites every week.
