The ECW X-Press: 10/14/08

10/14/2008

Pre-show
run-through:

Last week I made cruel and insensitive jokes about the Boogeyman’s level of talent.  I’m not gonna lie, I was surprised at how many people claimed to like Boogey.  And don’t get me wrong…I enjoy him hiding in closets and I especially enjoy him walking around like a freak with his awesome smoking stick.  But the worm thing got old after the first…oh, say…once.  And the last time he had a good match was…um…never?  I remain quite skeptical.

Anyways, last week was kind of a setup for this week and we have yet to set up a match for Cyber Sunday, so this had better be good.

(opening video)

Hey look, it’s Big Drippy.  How awesome was it to watch him drip…err…wrestle…on RAW this week.  I swear he must have a CamelBak in his head.

So anyways, Atlas is also here to shout incoherently about how Big Drippy deserves another title shot, even though he’s lost about a million times to that Matt Harvey guy.  Teddy Long w/ Awesome Music is here to set things right.  He says Henry will get another chance, but it will be up to the fans.  “All through the night”, we will have TWO qualifying matches to fill the other two spots.  I guess you do what you can with a forty-minute show.

Evan Bourne comes out and offers a handshake to Drippy, then yanks it away.  Smart kid, right?

(ads)

Chavo’s music isn’t as good when not performed by Miz and Morrison.  Also…Chavo on ECW?  I mean, really?

Evan Bourne vs. Chavo Guerrero
Chavo works a headlock takedown.  Todd talks about how obsessed Chavo is with returning to the glory of the ECW title, which is funny considering he’s been on this show like…once this month.  Bourne with a deep armdrag and Chavo takes a stroll around the outside.  Sweet ankle pick takedown by Chavo and he slides across to throw on another headlock.  He transitions to an armbar.  Eventually Bourne hits a couple of armdrags, including one leaping from the second rope.  Chavo gets a knee, a kick, a European uppercut and stomps.  Bourne comes off the ropes for a wheelbarrow armdrag that sends Guerrero to the outside, setting up for an EFFING CORKSCREW PLANCHA!

(ads)

Bourne quickly eats knees on a standing moonsault attempt.  Chavo works a sub move for a while and busts out the rolling ~LIGER KICK!  This is awesome.  Bourne hits some kicks and a leaping high knee.  Bourne goes for a top rope rana and crotches himself in epic fashion.  Kickout at two!  Single leg crab for Chavo…which lasts for about a minute until Bourne kicks his way out.  Chavo hits two Amigos, but naturally on the third Bourne counters.  Spinning thrust kick, but Chavo gets a back elbow.  Going up top, he sets himself up nicely to eat a top rope rana!  Up top, Shooting Star and Evan is headed for his first pay per view match.
Winner:  Evan Bourne by Shooting Star Press @ 9:40

Usually when matches are fun and full of spots, I still complain because they’re too short.  This was fun and full of spots, and still managed to stretch well past ten minutes with the break.  Chavo had one of his best outings in eternity here, and Bourne was great as always.  Can’t say it’s a match I’ll remember a month from now but it was damn sure a good one.
Match Rating:  7.9/10

After the match, Big Drippy is a bad sport, so he runs out and kills poor Evan.  And then shakes his hand.

(ads)

Can I say this?  Am I allowed to—okay…the producers have cleared me to point out to you that WWE is not going to get enough votes to mean anything if they only open it to text votes.  I mean…who’s really wrapped up enough in wrestling to pay money to vote for match stipulations when WWE has already determined the outcome?

Apparently, the Boogeyman is taking a long time coming to get us.  He’ll return…eventually.

Backstage, Tiffany is all dressed up for Halloween.  She shows Teddy what she wants him to wear, and Jack Swagger interrupts by SAYING “Knock…knock.” I love when people are jerks in subtle ways like that.  That’s actually why MVP is one of my favorite guys in this business; he’s great at veiled digs and being funny without going for a laugh.  Anyways, Swagger wants in at Cyber Sunday.  Long says he still has something to prove.  Tommy Dreamer enters to express his desire to job to whoever the current champion is after Cyber Sunday.  And so we have it:  Dreamer vs. Swagger at some later date for a #1 contendership.  Teddy didn’t actually say that.  But we all know.

John Morrison (w/ The Miz) vs. Wussy Finlay

Finlay gets a side headlock and massive shoulder block.  Sweet chain sequence leads to Finlay locking in a leg bar.  Morrison turns it into a cross arm breaker.  Recountered into a zany leg lock.  Morrison fights to his feet only to fall victim to an excellent inside leg trip and a reapplication of the leg bar.  Morrison tries to fight out, and Fit goes instead to a single leg crab.  Morrison kicks his way out, and hits the running knee smash for a one count.  Armbar.  I go take a bathroom break, and return to find it still locked in.  Finlay throws Morrison into Miz as Miz tries to insert himself into the match.  Finlay distracts the ref as Hornswoggle dives over the bottom rope onto Miz and Morrison.  Miz is pulled under the ring for some reason.

(ads)

Morrison has returned to the armbar when we come back; he adds a knee to the shoulder for some extra nastiness.  Moonlight Drive countered, but Finlay misses a shoulder charge.  Morrison hangs up the arm in the ropes and kicks it.  Sweet arm breaker, and back to an aggressive arm lock.  Short arm clothesline connects when Finlay escapes.  Mounted punches and an armbar.  Finlay escapes a corner charge but bumps heads with Morrison; backslide gets two for Finlay.  Finlay gets some clotheslines and shoulder charges.  FINLAY ROLL!  Morrison comes back with a backbreaker into a Reality Check neckbreaker.  Hornswoggle rolls into the ring and plays dead.  Referee distracted, Finlay gets the shillelagh…MIKE KNOX STEALS IT FROM HIM!  Best Mike Knox appearance ever.  Springboard enziguiri gets two for Morrison off the distraction.  Knox gets pulled under the ring.  I hate this show.  Morrison distracts the referee, and Cryme Tyme (!!??) slip Finlay the shillelagh for a WHAM finish.
Winner:  Wussy Finlay by Shillelagh Shot @ 12:38

“It all makes sense now!” – Striker as Cryme Tyme emerge from under the ring.  I wouldn’t go that far.  Anyways, this was way too confusing for me, it had its good points and of course this was Finlay and John Morrison we’re talking about, so it wasn’t bad, but honest to God there were too many people and one too many midgets involved, and Cryme Tyme…isn’t on this show.
Match Rating:  5.4/10

After the match, Finlay and Hornswoggle celebrate with the gangstas until ~BETRAYAL!  Shillelagh to JTG!  Shillelagh to Shad!  Shillelagh to Hornswoggle!!

Okay, that third one was probably just wishful thinking.

As if this entire match segment wasn’t confusing enough, as Finlay backs up the ramp Big Drippy reappears to surprise him with a World’s Strongest Slam.

Overall Analysis:

I have two problems here.  One was the obscenely confusing ending.  The other is that this show only had two matches.  Now, the good part:  Only having two matches allowed them to have two ten minute matches, which I always approve of.  Overall, I have no idea how to rate this; but as neither Mark Henry or Mike Knox wrestled, Boogeyman stayed in the video packages where he belongs, and Tommy Dreamer appeared on the program, I’ll have to say…ummm…

Overall Show Grade: B-

BONUS SECTION:

It has come to my attention that I am not the only person in the world who thinks Val Venis is about twenty times better than the rest of the midcarders who are getting pushes while he sits on the sidelines.  As pioneered by Curtis Kash, created by The Glide, and soon to be supported by a cast of thousands, I'd like to introduce you to the Val Venis Fanclub, TWG Chapter!

And don't get caught leaving home without it, it's the official Val Venis Fan Club banner!  Throw it up at every forum you frequent, and some you don't!  To join the revolution, leave a comment here with your actual TWG name.  The Val Venis Fanclub will continue!

I'd love to be a part of the Val Venis Fan Club...

10 minute match for Evan, fantastic stuff. And could this mean the return of Badass Finlay? Hornswoggle gets taken out at some point by any of the other 98 people in the match this week, for a reasonable amount of time, Finlay goes on a rampage. Or is that also just wishful thinking?

Nice article, but it didn't seem like there was much to work with this week...

    That's a hot banner, Glide.

Thanks for explaining the Bourne Plancha with as much enthusiam (probably spelled it wrong) as it had, and nice report as always.

I have to say I agree, Glide. The ending did not make any sense at all.

However, I do like the fact that Cryme Tyme and Miz & Morrison have a feud, a feud I actually like! Did you watch Raw yesterday? Miz & Morrison rapping? Brilliantly funny!

By the way, could you add me to The Official Val Venis Fan Club? I've been a fan of Val Venis since his debut; he should have been WWE Champion at least one time in his career; at least he can actually wrestle! And Glide, are you a D-Lo Brown fan at all? When was the last time he was wrestling on TV after making like, 3 appearances against Santino? We should start an Official D-Lo Brown Fan Club, with a banner. Who's with me? Val Venis for WWE Champion! D-Lo Brown for Intercontinental Champion!

Chavo and Evan gave us an A level match. It was a 9/10 match and if these two could go on 20 minutes, it would be a 10/10 match.

BTW: I'm in for the Val Venis fan club
