The Next Big Thing 01

Back to home
For quite a while, John Cena has been subject to much discussion. By this point in time, it is copiously lucid that Cena has become as stale as a wrestler – much less a champion – has ever been. The fact of the matter though, is that there is nothing else Cena can do, and right now, I’ll explain why.

Firstly, the reason Cena has been kept in his ‘unbeatable’ position has been due to a number of reasons. Originally, Cena was one of the top five most over faces in the WWE. This, coupled with the fact that Vince McMahon was looking to create the next Hogan was what led to Cena being given his monster push. Surprisingly enough, the WWE didn’t learn from the previous ‘Hogan-esque’ push given to Brock Lesnar, and the dangers associated with placing all their eggs in one basket.

Regardless, from there the story is well known. As time progressed, and Cena began to emerge as the ‘Superman’ we know and hate/love today, the fans who were smart to the business (commonly referred to as ‘smarks’) began to revolt. As the backlash to Cena’s monster push built and built, the WWE ignored it. One couldn’t blame them at the time. Cena was still over with the kids and women, and he was making Vince McMahon a heap of money. However, the WWE failed to realise the results of these actions.

The reason Cena was over with the kids – who made up the majority of Cena’s merchandise sales – was because he was the face who seldom lost. The consequences of this however, were firstly that Cena would have to remain a face to draw money, as kids will only cheer for faces, and that he would have to continue winning, as that was the reason the kids liked him so much. What this has led to now, is a problem where Cena cannot turn heel, nor can he be brought down to allow others to shine on Raw. Other faces, such as Matt and Jeff Hardy today, or The Rock and Steve Austin in the past didn’t face this problem, as they never needed lengthy title reign to be over and stay over. Whether this is a reflection of the WWE’s lack of faith in Cena’s abilities is a question that will probably never be answered.

Now on occasion, Cena has lost, but those were ‘blue moon’ occurrences so to speak. He has no choice but to lose to RVD, as the ECW crowd would have literally rioted, as that has happened in the old ECW in the past. However, a few weeks after this loss, he was champion yet again. The same thing happened with Edge. In the end Cena would always come out on top. The one exception to this was Shawn Michaels, which was Cena’s only clean loss over the past three years, but as HBK was also a face and the fact that Michaels didn’t beat Cena for the title, meant that this match didn’t affect Cena’s popularity with the kids too badly.

So now as Unforgiven approaches, many feel that Orton will be the man to end Cena’s title run.
Although I would love to see it happen, I just don’t believe that this will be the case. Orton’s backstage antics, coupled with the fact that Cena has been made to look stronger than ever going into this match, leads me to believe that Orton will be jobbing again. And on the off-chance that Orton does win the title, it will most likely be Cena winning the title back, and coming out on top once the feud has concluded.

So while I’ll be hoping and praying – like many of you out there – for Cena’s ‘reign of terror’ and his stranglehold on the WWE Title to finally come to an end, I certainly won’t be holding my breath.
