The Play with Plague: TNA Report for 09/03/09

Last Chance to Surrender

This episode is chalk full of tournament matches, for the last two spots in the main event at No Surrender, and for the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Titles.

Match 1: Rhino vs. Sting (Qualifier)

Wow now this is the way to start of any show, Sting and Rhino. This starts up with a lockup, but Rhino takes a quick advantage. Rhino tries to whip him into the corner, but Sting reverses it, and follows with two Stinger Splashes. He kicks out the leg of Rhino, and locks in the Scorpion Deathlock. It looks close, but he makes it to the ropes. He gets Sting into the corner, and spears.

Rhino works over the ribs of Sting, and starts to choke him, and follows with a body scissors. Sting punches his way out, but Rhino keeps the pressure up. Sting misses a splash, and followed up with a belly to belly suplex from The War Machine. He sets up for the gore, but Sting ducks to the side, and hit’s a Scorpion Deathdrop!!!

Winner: Sting

Match Rating: 6/10. Nice and quick to start off.

GORE!!! Rhino smashes Sting with a gore out of frustration, leaves…no he comes back in and…GORE!!! GORE!!! GOOOOOOORRREEE!!!

The trainer is taping up Sting, and he believes he has one or possibly more cracked ribs.

Booker T is talking, kind of, with Kurt. I caught “Morgan” and “did to me”. Kurt says that he is his project. Kip James is in there, apparently he’s supposed to be answering phones. Booker calls for Scott, and he leaves. Now, Scotty says that they’re painting the MEM locker room, so he has to stay with Booker, and he‘s mad. Oookay then.

Match 2: Chris Sabin vs. AJ Styles (Qualifier)

I hope this is the longest match of the night. Love the X-Division, plus its AJ and one half of the Guns.

AJ and Sabin are locking up and countering for each. Chris takes advantage, and hit’s a crazy backflipping arm drag, and AJ follows with an arm drag of his own. Countering a side head lock takeover, and Sabin escapes. Dropkick from AJ after ducking a clothesline. Sabin rolls outside, and Styles chases. Sabin, back in the ring, gets pulled out by his legs, but hurricuranas AJ in the process. That was sweet.

Fireman’s carry from Sabin, and he drop AJ onto the guard rail. Sabin is beating on Aj for a while, but AJ gets out of a chin lock, catches a kick, and slams Chris’s face into the mat, and follows up with a monstrous clothesline, followed by a springboard forearm for a 2 count. Styles goes for a Style’s Clash, but Sabin hit’s a nice roll up for two, misses a Cradle Shock, goes for a tornado DDT, but AJ counters into just a gorgeous crazy slam. But he only gets two.

AJ tries to hit a forearm into the waiting Sabin in the corner, but misses. Chris runs at him, but gets elbowed. AJ tries to go for a backflip neck drop, but Sabin counters it into a snapmare that puts AJ in the corner, and Sabin hit’s a running kick to the face of Styles! Sabin goes for a springboard something, but misses, and…Pele!!! Into a Styles Clash for the 3 count.

Winner: AJ Styles

Match Rating: 12/10. Yes, it was that good. Go to spike.com and watch this match.

Lauren is with Hernandez, asking him how he feels about this match. He says that he made a promise to himself, so it doesn’t matter that he’s facing Homicide. Eric Young shows up and tries to recruit him again.

Daniels makes his way out to the ring with a mike. He tells us that on September 20th, he again is the challenger for the X-Division Championship. But before that, he wants to talk to Joe. He comes out, and Daniels tells him he never thought these circumstances would be there if they fought again. Because before, TNA revolved around the X-Division, specifically, Joe, Daniels, and Styles. He said that they became family. He gives us some history about them in TNA.

Joe says that he really doesn’t care, and he has things to do. He tries to leave, but Daniels stops him. He mocks him in the MEM, because they’re scared of them. He says that he took the money and threw away his friendship and integrity, and that no one recognizes him anymore, bring up his wife and kids, and Joe snaps, suplexes, and leaves.

Ads

Lauren is with Morgan, asking about the relationship between him and the Mafia. He says that last week was just another “rookie mistake”, and everything with him and the Mafia is fine. Uh huh, I’m sure. Matt is anxious to get his hands on Kurt.

Match 3: Suicide vs. Doug Williams (Qualifier)

Counters from each to start, with holds and drags. Suicide takes the advantage with the rolling Samoan drop, but Williams is back with a back drop. He lands a running knee to Suicide in the corner, and chokes him on the ropes. Williams has grounded Suicide, until Doug misses a suplex, but he takes the advantage back quickly with an elbow. Snap suplex float over into a 2 count. Knee to Suicide in the corner, then goes top rope, but he hit’s a jumping enziguri.

Suicide hit’s a springboard dropkick, and a jumping neck breaker. He goes for a moonsault, but the Pope comes out, and Suicide hit’s a diving cross body. He goes back in, but Pope holds him so Williams can capitalize into a rolling german suplex, which just looked badass.

Winner: Doug Williams

Match Rating: 7/10

JB is with Sting, and the trainer said that he has 2-3 cracked ribs. He reminds Sting that he isn’t in his prime. Sting says that he obviously knows, but he probably won’t get many more chances, and he knows the end is near. So he’s going to fight. WOO!!!

Lauren is with the Beautiful People. Blah blah blah. But man they’re hot.

Match 4: Sojo Bolt & Hamada vs. Christy Hemme and Tara

Repping the WWE alums. Nice.

Tara and Hamada start off with a lockup, and counters from both. Tara hit’s a roll through and bridge combo for a two count. Tara is making some nice counters. Tara bows to Hamada, but she kicks Tara in the head. Hamada hit’s a springboard moonsault onto Tara, and tags in Sojo, but Tara gets Hemme in.

Sojo has the advantage, but tags in Hamada, who kicks her in the face.

Ads

Sojo is in with Hemme with the advantage, but Tara comes in swinging on Sojo, and following with a big clothesline. Tara hit’s a kick to her face, and Hamada breaks up the following pin attempt. Hemme, takes out Hamada, and Tara lands a Widow’s Peak, with is just a devastating looking move, no matter who uses it.

Winners: Tara & Christy Hemme

Match Rating: 5/10

Hamada hit’s the Hamada Driver on Sojo after the match.

JB is with Kurt Angle, asking about Matt Morgan. He says that he thinks Matt is working him, but Angle says that Morgan needs him. They run into Matt, who says he’s ready for No Surrender. Matt mocks him, and Kurt asks him if he’s screwing with him. I’m curious, why is TNA making Kurt Angle like a way too trusting and stupid person? It doesn’t work. Just saying.

Ads

LAX promo and history.

Match 5: Homicide vs. Hernandez

Hernandez takes the jump with power, but Homicide lands quick shots, but walks into a double hand choke toss. He misses the Border Toss, and Homicide dropkicks the knee. Its back and forth with shots for a while, but Homicide starts working on Hernandez’s knee and leg. Homicide attempts a tornado DDT, but Hernandez counters with a belly to belly overhead suplex. Homicide runs at him, but Hernandez counters and does the original Dominator of Lashley’s.

Winner: Hernandez: 5/10

They shake hands after, but Homicide still looks pissed.

Lauren is with the Brits. Williams says that he’s a big fan of AJ’s, but to be the best, he has to beat the best, AJ. He says that Terry and Magnus won’t be out there with him.

JB is with AJ, who says that his confidence is back 100%, thanks to Sting. He says that he hit rock bottom, but now is rising from the ashes.

Kurt Angle heads out to the broadcast table.

Match 6: Doug Williams vs. AJ Styles (Finalist Match)

Ads. But lets hope this match is half as good as AJ’s first. But if I have to watch this commercial one more time, I’m going to scream. If you’ve watched the show on spike.com, you know what I mean.

The match starts with a lockup, and some nice looking takedowns. Quick rollup gets a two count for AJ. This is just super quick counters and moves right now. Headlock on AJ, into a float over from AJ into a suplex and knee drop, and a reverse figure-four. AJ goes for a springboard something, but Williams catches him and hit’s a falling uppercut on him.

Doug has Styles grounded now, but AJ fights out, and hit’s a running forearm, but they smack heads, cause Williams lets out a bleep. They’re trading shots in the center, until AJ hit’s a dropkick, and a front flip over the ropes to the waiting Williams. Back in the ring, he gets a 2 count. AJ has Doug in a torture rack, into a spinning back breaker. Up on top, AJ goes for a superplex, gets thrown off, and hit’s a diving forearm, but only a 2 count.

Headbutts and uppercuts, but AJ fires back with a spinning clothesline. He misses a Styles Clash, and Doug goes for the rolling german suplex, but AJ hits his backflip neck breaker. Nice ending series.

Winner: AJ Styles

Match Rating: 9/10. But you have to expect that drop, considering the opponent. But still awesome.

Angle leaves the table with an “Up your’s, Mike” (haha). JB congratulates AJ, and he says that he’s not done, and that he still has to climb the mountain. This time, not even himself will stop him.

Ads. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Lauren is with 3D and Jesse Neal, who have his back, and are going to train him right. Devon says that they’re coming for the Brits, then the MEM.

Match 7: Sting vs. Hernandez (Finalist Match)

Hernandez is working the ribs, and Sting’s messed up. But he still lands some chops and punches, and atomic drop and a dropkick, with leaves him down. Hernandez is worried about him though, to a point. He’s really working the ribs. Sting takes a timeout.

But “Homicide” comes down and starts attacking Sting, leading to a DQ. Its EY though.

Winner: Sting

Match Rating: There wasn’t one.

Hernandez is in the ring. He calls out Eric. World Elite comes out, and eventually the numbers game catches up with Hernandez, in the form of Rob Terry. But AJ comes out and fights, but again, the numbers. Beer Money is in the ring now, and the ring has been cleared.

World Elite is on the ramp, which is a bad spot, because

3D is coming down. RIOT!!! Hernandez has chased EY out of the arena, but the rest is just World Elite getting spanked. The crowd is chanting for tables. Bubba is beating on Basher, and 3D hit’s the Wassup on him. And now…GET THE TABLES!!!

Booker and Scotty are out, and beating down 3D. But Beer Money levels it up, but World Elite numbers it up in their favor. The MEM puts Storm through a table to end it.

Show Rating: 9/10. AJ Styles completely made this show.

Styles vs. Sabin was probably the best match I've seen this week. It was totally awesome!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I look forward to TNA shows because there may be some flashes of greatness like the Sabin/Styles match. I also find the women wrestlers in TNA completely believable and entertaining, which is much more than I can say for WWE. Daffney is my favorite character in Women's wrestling. You have to admire a chick who is willing to take a bump into thumbtacks.

100%. TNA owns when it comes to the X-Division and the Knockouts. Just add or improve a few storylines and they might be better than WWE. Might.

First, alij, anyone who reads the news feed has "heard" that rumor. Secondly, Angelina Love has a big, fugly nose that makes the rest of her face terrifying. But she's got a smokin' bod, so maybe toss that brown paper bag she carries over her head and I'd think about it. Third - TNA seems to be putting out some better caliber material these days. Better than RAW.

@ last post: And a lot better than ECW. Smackdown... that's a whole other thing.

TNA can't even compete with ECW....TNA will never have more success then they have right now.

World elite making Sting win made very little since. They doesn't help MeM with the title defense. It would have made more sense to do it the other way and have them make Sting lose to show what they can bring to The latino muscle man.

    @ Comment #9:
If you mean the old ECW, then you're absolutely right. If you mean the new ECW, then you're really, really haven't been watching it right now.

I think the whole idea of attacking Sting by EY is Ey injures Sting, he cant compete and Hernandez wins...
