Triple H Possibly The Most Overused Superstar

Back to home
Now before you read this article I am prepared to cop criticism to express my views, I appreciate the fact that some of my readers are going to dislike my views I do not wish to have to sort through HATE mail because of this, if you’re a huge HHH fan and you can’t cope with some criticism being fired in his direction, I suggest you don’t continue reading.+

Paul Michael Levesque better known as his ring name Triple H, The King of Kings, The Game or another nickname has gained in his illustrious 12 year career WWE. Let’s have a look at some of the things he’s accomplished with great help from WWF/E writers.+
In 1996  - He competed in his first Royal Rumble.  - Successfully ended the career of Marty Garner a young Jobber. Who sued WWF costing the business a lot of money in compensation.  -

Competed in the 1996 King of the Ring tournament.  - Successfully ruined Keyfabe in the MSG Incident costing him dearly inside the creative writing office. (I state this because if this event never took place who knows how much more of a push he could have received.)+

In 1997 - He changed his gimmick to the one he has had for the past 12 years, Triple H. - Formed Degeneration X. - Triple H and the Degeneration X Stable were being pushed again by the WWF writers. - Feuded with the Hart foundation. - Feuded with Owen Hart over the WWF European Championship. - Won the WWF European Championship.+

In 1998 - Became the leader of DX. - Lead the DX “Army in an invasion of WCW and the CNN buildings in Atlanta. - Was booked to win the Rocks Intercontinental Championship at Summerslam but suffered a legit knee injury. - Started Feuding with The Corporation stable.+

In 1999 - had a WWF Championship match against The Rock - Was involved with helping Shane McMahon retain the European Championship at Wrestlemania. - At Summerslam was in a Triple Threat match against Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mankind for the WWF Championship, Mankind won, but, Triple H won it off him the next night on RAW. - Held the title when it became the WWE Championship. - Lost it to Vince McMahon on SmackDown! - Regained it at Unforgiven in a six pack challenge. - Retained at No Mercy against Stone Cold Steve Austin. - Lost it to the Big Show at Survivor Series+

In 2000 - Was in the Royal Rumble - Was already 3 time WWF/E Champion - Dubbed himself The Game and was given the nickname The Cerebral Assassin by Jim Ross. - Picked up wins over stars like The Rock and Foley (Forcing him into retirement) at events such as No Way Out and Wrestlemania - Won the WWF/E championship to more times in a feud with The Rock after Wrestlemania, which ended at King of the Ring. - Entered a feud with Jericho which cultivated at WWF Fully Loaded - Stone Cold Steve Austin found out Triple H had paid of Rikishi to run him down. - Entered into a feud with Austin.+

In 2001 - Continued feuding with Austin  - Started a feud with Undertaker at Wrestlemania and teamed up with Austin to form the Two Man power trip - After Wrestlemania captured both the WWF Tag Team Championship and the Intercontinental Championship (twice) before the next PPV- Suffered a quadriceps injury putting him out for 8 months +Now for my Readers notice how much he had done in 5 years, that is a shortened list, imagine how much longer it would’ve been if I put every major event in his career in? For those of you who are getting sick of reading Triple H’s accomplishments be wary we still have 6 more years of success to go. +

In 2002  - He made his return as a face and won the Royal Rumble. (Hmm…now who does everyone bag that just did the same thing?) - He won the WWF Undisputed Championship at Wrestlemania - Lost his title to Hulk Hogan - Feuded with Jericho ending with a Hell in the Cell match at Judgment Day.  - At Vengeance the Keyfabe relationship of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon ended. (They actually got married almost a year later in 2003) - Jumped brand’s and went to Raw - Pedigreed Shawn Michaels at a DX Reunion and started feuding with him ending with an unsanctioned street fight, after Michaels won HHH beat him with a sledge hammer. - Was awarded the World Heavyweight Championship Belt when Lesnar jumped to SmackDown! - Triple H had 3 successful title defenses against names like RVD, Flair, and Kane. - Competed and lost his title in the first ever Elimination Chamber. - Regained the Title at Armageddon +

In 2003 - Formed Evolution with Ric Flair, Randy Orton and Batista, having the best wrestlers from the past and the present and having the future best wrestlers. This group received a massive push and by the end of Armageddon every member of evolution walked in without a title and came out with one. This was by far Triple H’s slowest year, maybe it’s because he didn’t want to risk injury before the wedding. Now Triple H married Stephanie McMahon on the 23rd of October, 2003, notice that after Tripe H marries a board member, the whole stable received a massive push. Am I suggesting from this stage onwards the only reason Triple H has had success is due to his “inside connections”, pure and simply, yes. +Now if you still aren’t bored reading about Triple H’s glory, you obviously have a larger attention span then me, when it comes to reading about someone’s success. (Notice the irony there considering I’m the one writing this whole article.)+

In 2004 - At the Royal Rumble Triple H defended his title to a double count-out with HBK - Triple H lost his title to Chris Benoit at Wrestlemania  - Triple H and Evolution turned on Randy Orton and attacked him after he successfully became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion. - He fought in a Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood against Shawn Michaels - He feuded with Eugene ending it at Summerslam - Became World Heavyweight Champion again defeating Orton at Unforgiven. - On the 29th of November, the title became vacant for the first time following a controversial triple threat match between HHH, Edge and Benoit.+

In 2005 - Triple H won the title back in an Elimination Chamber at New Years Revolution. -  At Wrestlemania he lost his title to old ally Batista. - He also lost his two rematches at Backlash and Vengeance. - He then took some time of wrestling to learn what it took to take on a full time executive position. - On his return in October he turned on Flair and started feuding with him. - Their Feud lasted over 3 PPV’s and contained one Intercontinental Title match which Flair retained.+

In 2006 - He competed in the Royal Rumble getting down to the final 3 after entering first - He won the Road to Wrestlemania tournament giving a shot for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania. - He lost to John Cena at Wrestlemania. - At Backlash he again attempted to win the WWE Championship but won it for John Cena when he ended the match with multiple sledge hammer shots to the other competitors. - Over the next few months Triple H continuously attempted to win the WWE Championship and again continuously blamed his short coming’s on the McMahon’s who he started a feud with. - Degeneration X reformed and repeatedly beat the McMahon’s in multiple match ups at many PPV’s. - Competed at Survivor Series when Team DX beat Team Rated RKO.+

In 2007 - He injured his right quadriceps muscle similar to his last leg injury but in the other leg. - He returned as The King of Kings and defeated King Booker at Summerslam, becoming the only King in WWE. - He won the WWE title against Randy Orton at No Mercy and successfully defended it against Umaga in the same night but lost it too Randy Orton who had scheduled a Last Man Standing match for the Main Event. - He started a feud with William Regal +And so far in 2008 - He ended his feud with Regal - He has competed in the Royal Rumble making it down to the last 2 only to be defeated by a returning John Cena.- He is now booked to compete in the No Way Out Elimination Chamber, which if he wins would give him yet another big match for the WWE championship at Wrestlemania. +Now that looks like the career of the most over used superstar Triple H. peeked in 2002 in my opinion and has been going down hill ever since. I’m not a Triple H hater I just wished to express my views that Hunter has been over used. +I think its about time that the creative writers of WWE start using newer superstars, such as Mr. Kennedy and Carlito  to stop them leaving the company, and maybe even give some of the other guys who are still young but have been their just as long, Jeff and Matt Hardy, more of a go. +The WWE writers seem to only see Triple H, HBK, Batista, John Cena, Undertaker, Randy Orton, Edge and maybe CM Punk, Mark Henry and Big Daddy V, as superstars that can be involved in major stories lines that revolve around the titles. You may be saying what about people like MVP and Jeff Hardy, MVP was involved in a storyline with Ric Flair for just under a month, not major but this Edge Undertaker Batista angle’s been around since just after Wrestlemania last year if not earlier. But what about Jeff he’s involved in a storyline with Orton. Yes he is but now Cena’s returned I can see that storyline ending as early as No Way Out, ready for the Cena Vs Champ at Wrestlemania. Although I may state that if Cena wins at No Way Out there may be a Hardy, Cena match at Wrestlemania, but I can hardly see how two long time face wrestlers will get into a feud. Although we must brace ourselves for the chance of yet another Triple H Wrestlemania appearance depending on the outcome of No Way Out’s RAW Elimination Chamber, and considering he’s won it in the past, who say’s the WWE Writers, won’t make him do it again.  +

Another thing people may say in response is that he is not as overused as Cena, yes Cena has been over used but I don’t think any Superstar in a five year career could have been involved in as many major events as this. Although I’d like to say I do agree with the statements Cena’s push has been going for way too long, maybe most people wouldn’t mind it if he went back to SmackDown and won the U.S Championship again. Also I’d like to point out Triple H has gone through 3 *true* gimmick changes in his career, most of which were in his first 3 years in WWE, Cena’s gone from Prototype, “Vanilla Ice Heel Stage”, Chain Gang Solider, Marine, and this gimmick half and half of his last two which everyone loves to hate. So while admittedly he’s over used at least he is mixing up his style and gimmick. +

Too conclude I wish to say I don’t hate Triple H, I don’t know Triple H I just believe that this once great career should start to slow down and maybe look at joining the board of executives, or maybe even just not putting him in as many title matches or opportunities for title matches.

Good article. I strongly disagree that WWE should give a bigger push to Carlito, he's done nothing with the small push he's gotten since they convinced him to stay.

But as for Triple H and especially his role relative to the internet's lightning rod of hate Cena, I completely agree. While Trips is good in the ring and great on the mic, he has done as much as any one guy can the last six or eight years to make RAW 'The Triple H Show'. I don't mind seeing him as A top wrestler, but he is simply not THE top wrestler anymore.

Exactly Glide that was the main point i was trying to get across, but some people are dedicated to worshipping one wrestler and won't accept any critism about that wrestler.

triple h is on the creative team with stephanie and he can manipulate the storylines and way he wants, basically he can give himself every title shot available and will probably give himself the main event at wrestlemania.

I really agree with hhh beng overused only if wwe pushed more than like 5 guys on each show it would so much more better example raw triple h cena orton so on even tho i like orton but they should push carlito charlie haas he has nice wrestling ablity just needs a push to let it out =D

My main problem with this is that it wasn't really an article. You took 95% of it just running down Triple H's history. You didn't add very much at all. I agree with the sentiment, and so does a large portion of the internet wrestling community so this is nothing ground breaking, but the article is poor at best. I'm a published writer, and I'd suggest less filler and more meat for your next article.

well, for starters a very good article which poses some good questions about the current storyline and its outcomes
I must say I quite like the HHH character...I believe he has merit in staying at the top for so long, apart from having influence on storylines. Then again, I agree that probably his character should lose some dominance from the main events, but there's really no good choices to replace him.
Carlito and Mr Keneddy may be pretty decent wrestlers, but their character lacks the Champions' charisma. Jeff Hardy has the skills to be one of the next top stars, as the public likes his "death defying" maneuvers, that are quite impressive to see.
But please end this John Cena hype that will regain the title against a much-fitter Randy Orton - who is at a great wrestling level nowadays.

My biggest complaint is he only uses about a half dozen actual wrestling moves in every match! I give HHH 2 yellow star, and not one more.

so wait a moment......

If HHH isn't the top wrestler who is? Orton NO HBK NO Carlito NO Kennedy got busted for drugs dont forget and Cena is crap Jericho not his former self JBL couldn't wrestle if he tried.

As for Gimmicks to "freshen him up" why when its not broken? look at Flair.

plus it was Triple H who put the title on Orton and said he should keep it to wrestlemania if he had wanted to manipulate that much he would have said give it me instead of going with the regal feud.

cant remember who made the point he has only a few moves but if that person can tell me anyone who links from move to move like on the video games.

I'm just ready to see someone else with the WWE Title for a while. Don't get me wrong, I like Cena but I'm tired of seeing him beating everyone. HHH should get the title again for a while, because he deserves it after that one night joke of a title hold. He didn't even get a rematch.

Posted by NightHawk on Sunday, February 24, 2008

First triple h is awesome and the reason people like carlito and Mr. Kennedy (thats Kennedy)arent in the main events and title pictures is because A: they suck and B: No one likes them. To be in the main event you have to be well skilled, everyone has to either completly hate you or completly like you. and thats why people like edge, triple h, Shawn Michaels, and John Cena are in the main event title matches.

Posted by Badcyborg on Sunday, February 24, 2008

Fiurst hes awarded the title and loses in a FAIR fight against triple h. Then later in the night he abuses his rematch to practicly STEAL the title from Triple H. The nthe next night on raw he has to get a 2 on 1 match where he still would have lost except he got DQ just to save his title. Then Shawn Michaels made his return and at the PPV randy Orton gets DQ to sve his title. Then at the next PPV hee knows he cant BEAT Shawn Michaels so he gets SCM taken away from Shawn just because Orton said (Shawn can never win a match without SCM) in my oppinion just like orton cant win a match without cheating or using the RKO. so Orton beats Shawn in a unfair fight. Then came Y2J who at the PPV came within seconds of winning the title when JBL came in thew ring and kicked him just because Y2J shoved him out of the way again Orton got DQ to retain the title. Next is Jeff Hardy lets see oh Orton beas a total AH and attacks Jeffs brother Matt. But at least for once at the ppv Orton won a fair fight. Then a returning John Cena wins the Royal Rumble and challenges Orton to a match at No Way Out. And of course Orton being the coward he is tried to get Cena counted out but when Cena made it in the ring at 9 Orton chose the way of the chicken and slapped the ref to get DQ. In conclusion orton says ive beaten challenger after challenger but the same thing happens i beat them, well thats partially true but the same thing is that he cheats and manipulates if you should be haten on anyone hate on the biggest chicken in WWE RANDY ORTON.

You'd overuse a tool in a toolbox if it could do everything you need it, when you need it to. I mean, heaven forbid someone that enjoys what they do for a living does it a lot.

Everything before 1999, and every time he did a mid-card feud (See : Eugene) is irrelevant for your argument. Overused implies a main event status. Just because they can fit in the main event, doesn't mean someone else gets the spotlight during that time. Hell, 75% of '06/'07 was in the midcard as part of DX. Mid-carders in storylines??? OH NOES!!

Second, the main core of his reigns were in the "title change every 2-3 months between the big guys" era. Austin/Rock/HHH/Foley. Spin the wheel and see which one got the title this month.

Third, it's difficult to find a person that can play the heel AND the face role well. HHH, Flair, HBK are the ones off the top of my head that all do killer roles on either side of the fence. When you can fill holes for the main event level, you're going to get used more often.

Plus, barring his WHC reigns in '02/'03, HHH kept his ass out of the title picture when it wasn't needed. He *loses* matches, and helps make people look like stars even when they lose to him. Who the hell else could make FUNAKI look like a potential upset for the WWE title?? HHH's matches are an effective back and forth momentum exchange that is rarely seen in main event matches that did not have "Benoit" and "Angle" in the match lineup. Current matches seem to have this "loser dominates, then winner does *ULLLLLTIMATE DOOOM* to win" (See Orton/Cena).

HHH is "overused" because he can be, and still gets the job done effectively. He will likely manage to be this generation's Ric Flair, and make great matches when called to the plate.

Just to further undermine your precious arguments, HHH has only managed to get the WWE title once in the last 3 years, for 2.5 hrs at Vengance 2007. HHH's last real title reign ended at WM 21.

I just have to point this quote out, because it's HILARIOUS:

"The WWE writers seem to only see Triple H, HBK, Batista, John Cena, Undertaker, Randy Orton, Edge and maybe CM Punk, Mark Henry and Big Daddy V, as superstars that can be involved in major stories lines that revolve around the titles."

Batista, Cena, Orton, Edge, CM Punk. These guys are all recent main event pushes! What the hell?? Batista (2003), Cena (2002), Orton (2005), Edge (2006), CM Punk (2007!!). Read this next line very carefully, and think hard on it:

YOU CANNOT PUSH EVERYONE! FOR SOMEONE TO REACH MAIN EVENT STATUS, SOMEONE HAS TO LOSE IT!

This is not Elementary soccer, where everyone gets to win. Only a small handful of people can hit the main event. This requires time and buildup in most cases. Edge has been around 2-3 years less than HHH. Like HHH, he busted his ass to get where he is! Main eventing someone is a HUGE risk on the WWE's side. If the person can't handle it, that is their money wasted.

This isn't a rant against HHH, it's a rant against people who instead of getting the silver platter main event push off the bat, they broke themselves working from the ground up to get where they are. Get over your instant gratification life and recognize hard work that actually paid off. This is one of the primary reasons I like HHH and Edge, they busted their ass for years for their EARNED spot at the main event level.

this article surely has some true facts...
but it is far away from being the hole truth

levesque is a great wrestler and has EARNED the success he had. he does everything for the business, pushes new stars like randy orton and batista.
he did the job at wrestlemania 22 for cena!!

and don't worry about the retirement, he will retire in maybe 5 years. and in this time he should be in the mainevent or upper midcard because he is an total package of wrestling, more than cena or batista for example will ever be^^

and as long as there are no talents who maybe upcoming superstars like michaels, HHH or others, like austin, rock, undertaker... there is must(!!!) be a triple h who carries the torch together with cena and edge.
indeed there are already some talents who could take his position someday (Mr. Kennedy, Orton, MVP, CM Punk, Jeff Hardy)
but these guys need be pushed and in maybe 2 years they will compete for the WHT. (I know, Hardy has already come this far but he is still very young so that he will be in the main event for many years)

ps: my english is bad, i know that by myself =)
so if you are able to find mistakes.. you can keep them ;)
