TWG PPV Preview: Great American Bash

Back to home
Welcome to our very first TWG PPV Preview!  I’m your host, The Glide, and myself and the TWG staff writers have got some quick picks for you on Sunday’s Great American Bash PPV.  Let's jump right in!

WWE Tag Team Championship Match:  The Miz & John Morrison vs. Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder vs. Jesse & Festus

The Glide:
I have a sinking feeling that the presence of four teams will just be a clever excuse to shuffle the belts off of Miz and Morrison without actually having them pinned.  However, I think the odds that I’m wrong are better than any challenging team’s individual odds, especially because only Finlay & son have received any true tag team build.
Winners, and STILL WWE Tag Team Champions:  Miz and Morrison

Curtis Kash:
This is a nice addition to the PPV...but I think the only winners that could be worthy are the current champions. They dare not put another title on Hornswoggle (do they?), Jesse and Festus are more of a comedic team who have been beaten soundly by Miz/Morrison before and The Edgeheads are only Edges running boys and a bit off winning any titles just yet. The reign of Miz and Morrison must continue for the good of everyone...and it will.
Winners (And Still Tag Champions): The Miz and Morrison

Akira Kagami:
WHOOOAAA~ we haven’t seen this kind of tag team mayhem in awhile.  Miz and Morrison have been champs since who can remember but can they defy the odds stacked against them? The Luck of the Irish, the Familia-backed Edgeheads AND the unpredictable power of the rednecks? Baw gawd! It’s going to be a slobberknocker!
Finlay will beat everybody up in the beginning while Hornswoggle will bring the comic relief.  Later Festus will go “HULK SMASH” and make it seem they’ll be the underdog winners! M&M will fight back with all they’ve got but La Familia is going on a rampage! Edge will somehow get involved and make the assist to ensure the Edgeheads get the gold and have them have HIS back during his match against Hunter.

The Philadelphia Phighter:
In what should be a classic if Finlay and Hornswoggle don't win, I literally don't have much of an idea. I'm leaning towards Jesse and Festus, but my pick is different
Your winners, and NEW WWE Tag Team Champions: Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder

Sammy_D:
The Miz and Morrison have had the titles for a while now and its about time they went back to SD. Finlay is now on ECW and would have won the titles by now if they were going to at all. So I see this one between J&F and K&H (What happened to having decent tag team names) I think Festus is way over so I think its about time to put the gold on them.
Winners: Jesse & Festus

Mr. Indianapolis:
Wait, did they just use every tag team they could find for this match? How bad is that? No really, think of the consequences. Though I suppose it may be time to break up Morrison and Miz. They’ve had the belts for a relatively long time considering they won it during a “random team up” for 2 people that were supposed to challenge Punk for the ECW championship. Yeah, it’s been that long. So who is it gonna be? Finlay and Hornswoggle? Eh, maybe, but Finlay really needs to go back to a singles career. Hawkins and Ryder? These guys rode on the heels of La Familia, and that time has passed. They’ll need to wait a bit longer. Call it wishful thinking, but Jesse and Festus have gotten quite the push recently, and I really want to see how Festus would look with gold on his shoulder or waist. I suspect Festus will proceed to his big d00d-ness to dominate the matchup, though I wouldn’t be surprised if Jesse ended up taking the pin. All this is really irrelevant I guess. What normally happens in these 4-way tag matches?
Predictions: Miz/Morrison

Matt Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin (US Title Match)

The Glide:
Sorry, I did not get all my writers’ thoughts on this one in because it is an unofficial match that has only just been added to most wrestling news sites’ cards last night.

The Glide:
As much as I am personally a fan of Shelton Benjamin, I think we’ve seen pretty clearly over the last…um…his career…that they don’t trust him.  Matt, meanwhile, is a fairly new U.S. champion with a lot of momentum behind him after defeating an amazing champion like MVP.  The only possible reason I can see a switch happening is if they want to bring the U.S. Title back to Smackdown, but as far as lower-tier titles go I think they’ve proved with Miz and Morrison that they don’t give a damn about brand continuity.
Winner, and STILL US Champion:  Matt Hardy

Akira Kagami:
It’s interesting to see that instead of mixing Shelton with Jeff, the powers that be feed him gold opportunity against Matt! We’ve seen Shelton fare badly with Jeff in the past so let’s see if he can do better against “The One Who Won’t Die”!  Shelton attacks with guns a blazing with those springboard attacks and gets the upper hand at the start! Matt Hardy will retaliate with his patented recovery 2-move combo of Side-Effect-to-2nd-Rope-Jumping-Legdrop/Double-Ax-Handle (baw gawd, that was a mouthful!).  Out comes MVP distracting the referee!! Shelton hits T-Bone Suplex!!! It’s over!!! 1…2… Jeff comes for the save!!  MVP is out of the equation!! Jeff Swanton Bombs poor Shelton and Matt then finishes the counterattack with Twist of Fate!!
Matt wins the defense!

Sammy_D:
This one's a tough one becuse Matt is a new champion but has now been moved to ECW. Although since Miz and Morrison have been allowed to hold a SD belt on ECW so long I can't see why Matt can't do the same. And plus I can't see Shelton holding the best at this stage.

Winner and still champ: Matt Hardy

Mr. Indianapolis:   A last minute matchup? With no buildup? Why is this? Oh yeah, they remembered that the Great American Bash was not defending the United States Championship. With the title, Matt is doing okay. Without the title, Matt is nothing without his brother. I'm going to call it wishful thinking and say that Matt wins. I mean really, normally the US Champ doesn't lose the belt unless he's going somewhere higher up the card. Right? ... Right? ... Oh Matt, you're in it deep now...
Prediction: Matt Hardy. Please?

Michelle McCool vs. Natalya (Divas Title)

The Glide: Natalya has thus far been portrayed as virtually unbeatable.  There’s no better choice for the inaugural champion than Natalya, even if it is of a doomed-to-fail belt like this one.  On the bright side, once WWE establishes the worthlessness of this belt, they’ll have free run to give Maria a title run.  There are no losers there, friends.
Winner, and NEW Divas Champion:  Natalya

Curtis Kash: I’m going with Natalya on this one for two reasons...the first, is that she is the most able canditate on the roster capable of carrying the title (her in rings skill aren’t too shabby). Secondly, she was nominated to be in this match weeks ago whereas it seemed the WWE were trying to search for a random opponent ever since for her to beat....that person is McCool...
Winner (And New Divas Champion): Natalya

Akira Kagami:
Unfortunately, I pay less attention to the storylines whenever the divas are involved but this much I know: both of them are talented and pretty but Natalya has a  better background in wrestling and Michelle is a “stick” (too thin; at least, for me she is).
It’s going to go to Michelle; despite my strong opinion Natalya deserves it more for her skill.  I’m pretty sure the WWE still has some animosity towards the Hart clan plus Natalya is heel so I pretty much doubt they’ll kick start the Diva title with one.

The Philadelphia Phighter:
My pick is the girl who's been getting the push longer. I hope this comes out to be the greatest Divas feud we've had in the past 4 years.
Your winner, and NEW Divas Champion: Michelle McCool

Sammy_D:
Does anyone think McCool has a chance here? In all seriousness I think this title was made with Natalya in mind! McCool might of gotten better in the ring but not good enough to reward her yet and as far as I know she’s not going to be in Playboy.
Winner: Natalya

Mr. Indianapolis:
This belt is pretty. It’s stupid looking for a title belt, but it’s pretty. I personally think Cherry would look good with that thing on, it almost fits her gimmick perfectly. Of course, the thing matches McCool’s outfit. Just look at that title. Does that thing scream “heel” at all? Though to that end, Maria is comingto Smackdown, and I bet she gets thrown in the title picture instantly. So, will we be face vs. face, or will natalya actually get this thing? Y’know, she just might. How easily can McCool’s submission move counter into a Sharpshooter? I bet that’ll be the most rehearsed spot of the show.
Prediction: Natalya Neidhart for the new Divas Championship.

JBL vs. John Cena (NYC Parking Lot Brawl)

The Glide:
I think that after John Cena shows up to wrestle after being hit by a car, being hit by JBL’s big floppy chest won’t be much competition.  Next week on RAW:  Cena cures the common cold while writing the great American novel!
Winner:  John Cena

Curtis Kash:
Most are expecting Cena to win this one....just what the WWE want you to think. Cena has been beating JBL for the best part of this year, its damaging JBL's credibility as a main eventer..and he will be expecting Cena to put him over at last (and in the match that JBL selected....his supposed specialty). Perhaps Cena is carrying an "injury" from Monday Night that will sway things in JBL's favour...
Winner: JBL

Akira Kagami:
Err… “I quit! I quit! I quit!”?! This feud was over years ago and was probably revived to give the WWE administrators “more time to observe if CM Punk as champion generates fans”…
JBL will finally break his curse with Cena and gets a win… BAAAH WHO AM I KIDDING?! This is a parking lot brawl!! They gave Cena the badass attitude just for matches like this!  Cena’s going to beat the stuffing out of JBL for that near hit with the car on RAW and pick up the victory.  Their respective tag team allies may get involved but CTC is definitely tougher than JBL with Cody and DiBiase.

The Philadelphia Phighter:
Come on, it's WWE's Superman vs. WWE's Tycoon. You've gotta be kidding me if you don't know who wins this.
Winner: John Cena

Sammy_D:
They always talk about how JBL is good in a brawl but then again Cena is all about brawling. And can anyone beat superman in a brawl? My prediction… No!
Winner: John Cena

Mr. Indianapolis:
Didn’t Cena just die on RAW? By what means did he escape anyway? Well, JBL is supposed to move on to challenge for the belt against Punk in the future from any hints I’ve seen, so I guess that means he needs to trump Cena at some point. Might as well make it here. Besides, Cena has racked up most of the victories, especially the moral victories. I can’t see this feud ending until JBL gets the win. And I want it over. That being said...Prediction: JBL. For all things good and holy, JBL.

Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho

The Glide:
After all these two have been through, it will be an automatic letdown if this isn’t the best match of the evening.  My gut tells me Y2J takes this one after HBK won their first encounter waaay back at Judgment Day.
Winner:  Chris Jericho

Curtis Kash:
This rivalry is going to Summerslam...its a banker....so that’s why Jericho must win here. We all know a clean HBK victory will put Y2J and this feud to bed...so a Jericho win here (through Lance Cade interference I suspect) will give the feud that last push it needs to reach their penultimate match at SummerSlam next month...
Winner: Chris Jericho

Akira Kagami:   Problem: Randy Orton injures himself and there’s no superstar heel dude to carry on the butt-stomping.  Solution:  [Y2J interviews Shawn] + [Y2J attacks Shawn] = [Instant heat!] x [Shawn costs Y2J his title] = [New Superstar Heel Y2J]… I hated this development since it cost Jericho his Intercontinental title, and seemingly left him no chance to ANY title anytime soon.
It’s Wrestlemania XIX with different hairstyles! Since Shawn is the one “coming back from the sidelines”, he’s going to win this one AND avoid being tricked again in the aftermath (he suffered a low blow at the end of the WM 19 match).  If Batista beats CM Punk, then Shawn will probably go after him for the title after this.

The Philadelphia Phighter:
In the match that will not live up to our expectations, the winner to me seems simple. Afterwards, I say the winner gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship.
Winner: Shawn Michaels

Sammy_D:
Shawn obviously is going into this with revenge on his mind. Jericho is always on his game. It’s really hard to say HBK won’t win this one but since I’m a Jericho fan I’ll just have to back him, and hopefully the WWE realize they need a new top heel…
Winner: Chris Jericho

Mr. Indianapolis:
The face always triumphs when they return after a heel has injured them in some way. But really, I’m not sure what these two are supposed to do when they’re done with each other. Maybe this is gonna go on longer? Bah, I hope not. Didn’t this whole thing stem from a Wrestlemania match? End it already. Shawn lost to Batista, so Jericho must lose to Shawn. Let the burying of Jericho continue, despite heel-ness.
Prediction: Shawn Michaels

Mark Henry vs. Tommy Dreamer (ECW Title)

The Glide:
Ugh, I feel bad that I’m picking all the champions to retain.  But I just don’t think any title switches currently make sense.  I will be rooting my heart out for Dreamer, and if WWE knows what’s good for them he will win.  However, WWE-style booking dictates that a new champion with a brand sparkling new manager isn’t going to lose his first title defense.
Winner, and STILL ECW Champion:  Big Drippy

Curtis Kash:
Although my heart wants Dreamer to win the title and save what credibility ECW has left...my head tells me that anything but a Mark Henry win is impossible here...he has only just won the title and should make short work of Dreamer here...
Winner (And still ECW Champion): Mark Henry

Akira Kagami:
There’s a lot of talk that Henry isn’t championship material and he only got the title due to a certain Mr. Hayes being prejudice but I think it suits him well.  He’s tough and his gimmick is ideal for the ECW belt.  Now he can prove that he’s worthy by beating one of the franchises mainstays.            Dreamer is out to reclaim the title in the name of Old ECW!! He tries to bring down Henry but starts losing in the power game.  He changes tactics and picks a body part, most probably the leg and it works! Dreamer busts out the DEE DEE TEE!!! Cover, but no! It’s not enough to put out Henry! Watch out, here comes Atlas! Distraction leads to World’s Wettest… I mean Strongest Slam! Dreamer kicks out!? Delaney shows up for the save!!... but he gets clocked by Atlas! Another Strongest Slam puts out Dreamer and gives Henry the win!

The Philadelphia Phighter:
The Dream vs. The Strongest Man in the World. Err, I mean the World's Strongest Man. PPV Squash Match.
Your winner, and still ECW Champion: Mark Henry

Sammy_D:
When I found out about this match I had to laugh. Who would of thought we would ever see this match on a PPV! Both these guys have been jobbing for the past year and now they have a title match at a PPV? If this is their way of trying to build Mark Henry up it’s a joke.
Winner: Mark Henry

Mr. Indianapolis:
Again, Henry just got this belt. But here’s the thing: both of these guys have become the upper tier of jobbers. Seriously, 2 jobbers are going at it for a world belt? Bah. As reassuring as it would be for ECW to actually have a champion that was an original, it ain’t gonna happen. This is a near-squash to make Henry appear dominant again. At least, until Finlay gets in there with his shillelagh for the eventual title run he better be getting.Prediction: Mark Henry to retain.

Triple H vs. Edge (WWE Title)

The Glide:
This will be the second best match of the night, but in the end I think they’ll continue to play the “Edge is weak without help from the GM” card, which sucks for him because it’s undermining his character.  If Edge and Vickie make up after breaking up after making up after breaking up, I kill myself and take my computer with me.
Winner, and…um…STILL WWE Champion: Triple H

Curtis Kash:
I’m disappointed with the way this match has been built up...the two have had virtually no interaction with one another until this week’s show but they have had enough run-ins over the years to make this a great outing. Edge will have one eye on the wedding and that will be his downfall.....
Winner (And still WWE Champion): HHH

Akira Kagami:
Ha, HA! THE WEDDING IS OFF!! Triple H is on a ROLL!! Edge has lost everything once again and has nothing to hold him back from going berserk on The Game this Sunday! However with all the current twists and turns this angle has took, the future is still uncertain… Triple H will dominate but Edge will retaliate with fury, eventually entering a contest of “Who’s Dirtier?” and try to one up on the cheap shots and tricks.  Edge is going all out on this one and will definitely want to hit the Double ConChairTo.
Triple H will come back by unleashing his trusty sledgehammer and The Pedigree for the win and denies Edge his quest for gold!

The Philadelphia Phighter:
I have two words for every reader out there. No, not those two words. La Famila.
Winner, and new WWE Champion: Edge

Sammy_D:
Triple H has only just won the belt and I doubt he was moved to SD to lose the belt straight away. The only way I see Edge winning this one is with heavy outside help. I predict a Triple H victory by DQ.
Winner and still champ: Triple H

Mr. Indianapolis:
I see absolutely no reason why Edge should get his title back. I suspect the Undertaker will be making a return, which will turn Edge’s attention back to the Phenom. Besides, if Edge won, what is Trips supposed to do? He’s only really associated with Edge since he came to SD!, and the belt would give him a way to move on.Prediction: The H’s to retain.

CM Punk vs. Batista (World Heavyweight Championship)

The Glide:
Is it possible that Punk’s title win was just a stopgap until Big Dave could get the title?  Perhaps…but quite frankly, Batista isn’t important enough to the WWE to let him squash their brand new main eventer in his first RAW PPV appearance.  If they really want Dave as champion, they can wait until there’s a credible champion to take it from, whether that’s Cena or just Punk with a few more defenses under his belt.
Winner, and STILL World Heavyweight Champion:  Crazy Mariachi Punk

Curtis Kash:
The Batista heel turn is imminent...and this may be the night it begins. How you ask? I believe Punk will sneak a victory (I believe WWE is gonna give him a run with the title) and Batista will turn extremely bitter following the loss and go heel on Punk in true sore loser fashion...
Winner (And still World Champion): CM Punk

Akira Kagami:
All this talk about it but I still don’t get how Batista can become an effective heel all by himself… sure he got heat beating up Shawn Michaels but me… and winning a fatal-4-way against Kane, Cena and JBL certainly doesn’t make you a heel.  Anyway, that’s how he earned his shot and all he has to do is beat Punk to become the champ once again. We’re all afraid that Punk might only be a transitional champion but he’s still hanging there.  He’ll try to go for G2S but Batista’s too freakin’ huge so he’ll go back to Anaconda Vice.  Batista will struggle first then wiggle out of it and hit Batista Bomb.  Suddenly… MASKED KANE!! KANE COMES OUT WITH THE MASK AND CHOKESLAMS BATISTA TO HELL!!! He’ll then plop Punk on top for the pin and the defense!!!

The Philadelphia Phighter:
I'm pretty sure WWE is kicking themselves for not having a John Morrison vs. CM Punk for Money in the Bank. I can't clear cut a winner here, but I can give a pick.
Winner, and *sigh* still World Heavyweight Champion: CM Punk

Sammy_D:
The most unlikely champion CM Punk has been rumored to be having a short reign. I don’t believe this. I see a victory here for the straight edge superstar and an upset Batista turning heel.
Winner: CM Punk

Mr. Indianapolis:
This is gonna be one of those PPVs where no significant championship is changed. I can feel it. Thanks to Punk, ratings have gone high again for RAW. And the dear chairman has said that was his determining factor for the length of this reign. Besides, Punk just got the belt. Batista has not fared well getting the belt back from people that sniped it from him. Same belt too, have you noticed?
Prediction: CM Punk to retain. Somehow. How?

The Glide:  Thanks for tuning in to our preview, guys, and you can catch The Great American Bash by PPV or WWE.com webcast at 8 PM ET this Sunday!

Once again, I'm a loner voting for Edge. And we all voted for CM Punk - why? I mean, Mark Henry is obvious, but why CM Punk?

*laughs at the fact him and Sammy_D both said Cena was superman*

I also insinuated Cena was superman. Not that shocking of a statement, considering he just...ermmm...survived being 'run over'.

As for Punk, I guess it's just that it doesn't make sense to anyone to have him lose his title at his first PPV defense.

Great debut to the TWG previews. Hope Masked Kane returns as predicted and that could be the thing that will make Batista turn heel. It will be dull if Cena picked up the win.

It's hilarious to read this...they all seem well thought out, then akiri comes out with this totally random ending.

Honestly, here are my predictions...

Natalya Neidhart
-It's a diva title. No prestige at all. They can give it to whoever they want. and since there's a whole truckload of face divas, it only makes sense to give it to a heel for a future feud.
Matt Hardy
-I don't even remember the last time Benjamin won a match. If he has, I must've slept through it. No chance in hell he wins a title with no push beforehand.
Miz & Morrison
-Look at the last title Hornswoggle held. You can find it in WWE's "Defunct Title" section. Jessie and Festus are good, yes, but not title worthy yet. And Hawkins and Ryder? Their sole purpose seems to be to get beat up by festus. Nice.
John Cena
-It's John Cena. Who has beat JBL in almost every match he's ever faced him in. Who do you think's gonna win?
Chris Jericho
-I don't know. I honestly see Jericho taking this one. He lost to Shawn ad Judgment Day. Same feud, really. I think Jericho picks up the win.
Mark Henry
-Sorry Dreamer. But have you seen the guy?
CM Punk
-Hes putting butts in seats. I think he's got a bit of a title run ahead of him.
Edge
-I'm an Edgehead, so naturally I gotta cheer for him. The issue between Edge and Taker is for the WH belt. without it, the feud is toast. But SD has the WWE title now. Taker's comin back with a vengeance, and whether you like it or not, you know he's gonna get in the title picture immediately. Since he's got problems with Edge, it only makes sense that Edge holds the title when taker returns. Of course, this is assumng Undertaker makes a return real soon.

Tag Team : The Edgeheads. The Miz and Morrison have had the tag team belts too long, The Edgeheads will win thus giving more heat to the La Familia Storyline and giving them instant noteriety. FANS will hate having MIZ and Morrisson lose and they will hate having The EDGEHEADS win, so look for too popular teams to lose and 1 unpopular team to win, maybe jumpstart a three way tag team battle through the division over the coming months..

Matt Hardy vs Shelton Benjamin : hmm it's been awhile since the Gold standard has won anything, look for a back and forth exciting match that may very well be the next MVP vs Matt Hardy for the next while. It actually looks like ECW is doing a youth push and stuff and MATT HARDY fits that bill, look for him to retain as part of ECW's new stuff.

Natalya vs Michelle Mc Cool : Pushing Young blood and looking for that "New Hot" Wrestler thats going to push the WWE to new heights, WWE is going to push this new Youngblood Natalya. Watch for Young Blood Domination as the WWE is trying to push all the buttons and find the new "desperately" needed big thing and by all reports Natalya is more along the lines of what they are looking for.

JBL vs John Cena : This will be nasty and bloody, but "The Wrestling God" will win, look for JBL to challenge for CM PUNKS title in the new future with JOHN CENA out of the way and possibly out of the WWE, if not look for basically 2 co #1 contenders, but that'll go old fast, the ring is too small for JOhn Cena not to give him a championship and CM is going to have his for awhile as the WWE hopes he is the NEW SAVIOUR of its hallowed ranks.

Shawn Michaels vs Jericho : Welcome to Hell, on one had you have a Veteran in Michaels returning to action and another two guys currently in limbo of sorts. Expect Michaels to become an in ring mentor to the next gen of talent (and possibly a DX reunion) and Jericho to be pushed and hyped as he knocks one out. Younger more hipper blood (Jericho) vs older more established leadership wins at this time.

Mark Henry vs Tommy Dreamer : Ok here's what going to happen (remember Mike Tyson) well Tony Atlas is going to do that to Mark Henry, expect Tommy Dreamer to be a big time bridge between the old and the new appeasing old fans and giving the new bloods someone who will support them and help build their new future, Atlas is on Tommy's side and the deciding factor. LOL. Unless Tommy gets "hurt" and COLIN DELANEY subs in becoming Champ, which would actally suit his angle quite nicely and he would have Dreamer in his corner and MARK HENRY as his overall nemesis and challenger a win win for the WWE.

HHH vs Edge, ok this one all depends on when the UNDERTAKER is coming back, look for this feud to be long and bloody, but in the end (of the storyline) Edge will win the championship and have to stand on his own without the back of his FAMILIA against the Undertaker and prove that he can be a Face Champion. This is going to be nasty and will lead into the next PVP for sure, nothing will be settled either way, look for these two to lock horns for about the month or two before the Undertaker comes back and then Edge will win and face The Undertaker for the Gold. Also look for some interesting la Familia Stuff going on (big question will La Famillia still be around when the 'Taker comes back) and look for Edge to turn face, maybe even the return of the EVER POPULAR DX as Shawn Michaels comes over to help HHH.

Baptista vs CM PUNK : well this one is trial by fire, look for Punk to Win and Bapista to provide his first big test, this'll last until JBL steps up and become the #1 and really pulls out all the stops, when he does look for Baptista to get some well deserved time off. The WWE is LOOKING for the Saviour of the Buisiness and right now they believe PUNK is it. Look for Cm Punk to have a nasty Baptism (lol) by Fire and Blood and look for the WWE to put alot of their big Power names against him in the coming months in order to figure it out.

For those of us who are bored and enjoy scores:

Glide: 3
Curtis Kash: 4
Akira Kagami: 4
Philadelphia Phighter: 3
Sammy_D: 3
Mr. Indianapolis: 4

I gave Indy the CM Punk match, since he only said that Punk would retain somehow. I remember being quite disappointed last GAB, but this one was actually pretty good.

Haha only got 3 out of 8 right! To be honest this was a very unpredictable PPV except the 3 main title matches. Well done WWE :)
