What Ever: Greatest Tag Teams |
 |
|
What Ever: Welcome to the first edition of, What Ever! For this edition, I am going to be talking about the greatest Tag Teams in the history of WWF/WWE and WCW. Please keep in mind that although there is a lot of facts in this article, I will be talking about my personal opinion of what I think arethe greatest Tag Teams of all-time. If you happen to disagree, agree, want to add something, or want to add your own list of the greatest Tag Teams, please leave a comment down below. Have fun reading! MY Top 10 List of the Greatest Tag Teams in the History of WWF/WWE and WCW: #10 - Rated-RKO ( Edge and Randy Orton ) They formed in October of 2006 on a Raw episode which Edge had Orton as a guest on the Cutting Edge segment. Edge talked about how Orton was getting held back by D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) which ended up forming Rated-RKO to feud with D-Generation X. What impressed me the most about this team was how well they worked together. It looked like they had been teaming with each other for years with the chemistry they had, obviously it helped that Edge had been in Tag Team matches his whole career and Orton was a great in-ring performer. Rated-RKO lasted only 6 months as a Tag Team and ended up winning the Tag Team championships once, but what gets them on the list is their chemistry they had together and how well those two combined to make a great heel Tag Team. #9 - The British Bulldogs ( Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid ) These two were real-life cousins and ended up forming as a Tag Team on UK's ITV Wrestling show, World Of Sport. The Tag Team eventually gained worldwide fame in the WWF competing in memorable feuds with the likes of The Hart Foundation. The team is also remembered by famous musician, Ozzy Osbourne, who managed the team during an appearance at Wrestlemania two, in which they won the World Tag Team Championships. What gets them on the list is their flare they had and still to this day one of the greatest and most successful teams that Great Britain has ever sent to the WWF/WWE. #8 - The Steiner Brothers ( Scott Steiner and Rick Steiner ) The Steiners graduated as all-Americans from Michigan, as talented amateur wrestlers aspiring to use their talents to get to the top of professional wrestling business as a Tag Team. The Steiner Brothers are known mostly for their time spent in WCW during the 90's, where they engaged in a legendary feud with Doom(Ron Simmons and Butch Reed), as well as many other Tag Teams on the scene at the time. What gets them on the list is both of the Steiner's, Rick especially, were famous for their powerful hard hitting maneuvers and that they had success for many years as a Tag Team, working for alot of different places. #7 - Harlem Heat ( Booker T and Stevie Ray ) These two were real-life brothers and had always had dreamed to make it to the wrestling business as a Tag Team. Their success as a Tag Team started mainly when they hit WCW in the early 90's. They went on to become ten time WCW World Tag Team Champions and sealing their fate as one of the greatest Tag Teams to enter the sport in many years, winning the titles a record Ten times, the most in the history of WCW. During their time spent in the company, they engaged in several memorable matches and feuds with wrestlers' such as Sting & Lex Luger, The Steiner Brothers and The Road Warriors, and many more. What gets them on the list is their success as a Tag Team and their amazing ability to work as one in the ring. #6 - Edge and Christian These two were very close friends and formed as a Tag Team on the canadian independent wrestling circuit. Formerly known as High Impact, and later on The Suicide Blondes while on the independant circuits, in the WWF the team was billed as Edge and Christian and re-imaged as brothers instead of just close friends. The team held titles in numerous wrestling promotions before signing with the WWF. The team is mainly famous for their feuds, in-ring abililty together, and for competing/winning of matches like TLC(Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) and ladder matches. They have won the WWF Tag Team Championships 7 times with countless defenses. What gets this team on the list is their in-ring ability together, how well the two worked together with storylines, and memorable matches they have had. #5 - The Hardy Boyz ( Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy ) These two were real-life brothers and first began teaming together in 1993 in independent promotions in North Carolina. The Hardy Boyz gained fame for their participation in ladder matches and TLC(Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) matches. In the WWE/WWF they are six-time World Tag Team Champions and former WCW World Tag Team Champions. They were always a crowd favorite. What gets them on the list is their flare, in-ring ability together, their risk-taking attitude, their storylines/feuds, and their many memorable matches. #4 - The Rock 'N' Roll Express ( Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) Two great friends with great trust for each other. The Rock 'N' Roll Express were famous for living their name, they were their name. Classic rock star hair, metal loving, high flyers who stole the show wherever they wrestled. Other than their legendary feud with the midnight express, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson have had great matches with the likes of the legendary Four Horsemen and The Heavenly Bodies. Much as the teams above, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson are a Tag Team who can get a crowd working just by stepping into a ring, Tag Team legends of old-school wrestling. What gets them on this list is there exreme flare, amazing in-ring ability together, chemistry, and that they just electricfied the crowd every single time they performed. #3 - Team 3D / The Dudley Boys ( Brother Ray and Brother Devon ) The team originated in the old Extreme Championship Wrestling as a stable with several members, but the team of Brother Ray and Brother Devon were the best known of the stable, and went on to capture the Tag Team championships in ECW a record Eight times. They eventually went on to the WWF/WWE, capturing the titles there again, Eight times, as well as an unofficial WCW World Tag Team Championship run. Team 3D is one of the most decorated Tag Teams of all-time and without a doubt when the time comes for them to retire, they will be remembered as one of the best of all time. They have earned legendary status by holding every major world Tag Team championship in America, as well as several championships in Japan. This team has made the list well its obvious if you read above, all Tag Teams need to follow The Dudley Boys way! #2 - The Hart Foundation ( Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart and Bret 'The Hitman' Hart ) The original Hart Foundation consisted of Bret 'The Hitman' Hart and Jim 'The Anvil' Neidhart, managed by 'The Mouth Of The South' Jimmy Hart. The team enjoyed success in the WWF originally as Heels, bringing a fresh new approach to the WWF's Tag Team division with Bret being the more technical and agile performer, and Neidhart being the powerful brawler. The team eventually turned Face after Jimmy Hart turned his back on them, and they got over with the fans immensely which led to two runs with the Tag Team championships. The original Hart Foundation eventually split up after Bret started a singles run, but their legacy still remains. The time they broke into the WWF as a Tag Team was a time where great and innovative Tag Teams were quite rare within the company, and the foundation, set the foundation for the future great Tag Teams over their tenure, as face and heel, engaging in amazing and memorable matches with the likes of The British Bulldogs and The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers. These guys made the list because they revolutionized Tag Team wrestling and made it what it is today, and made it so popular. #1 - The Road Warriors ( Hawk and Animal ) Best friends since childhood, making the chemistry they share in the ring a hundred percent natural. Chemistry is what makes a Tag Team successful, knowing each others styles and knowing each others moves, trusting each other completely. This was the way of the warriors. Whenever you mention Tag Team wrestling, whenever you mention Tag Team gold, you automatically think, The Road Warriors, the Legion Of Doom, Hawk And Animal. They will without a doubt go down as one of, if not the greatest and most decorated Tag Teams in the history of the sport itself. Also creating the most famous Tag Team finisher ever, The Doomsday Device. These guys made the list because they are the list. No team will ever pass the greatness that was, The Road Warriors! Hope you enjoyed it! Make sure you stay alert for the next edition of What Ever, and don't forget to check out my other article, The Smackdown Low-down!

I would have to put The Rockers in the list along with the APA. People always think of the APA nowadays and think "wow JBL sucks, how can you say that?" What some dont realize, is that Bradshaw was once an excellent in-ring competitor. The face version of APA was great and they had some hilarious promos. The one with London and Kendrick back long before L&K reached the top of the tag division ranks right up there with the top promos in SD history. APA has to be up there, even if most of these teams rank in front of them. I'd take out Rated RKO and replace them with APA. Not sure who to replace Rockers with.

Was waiting for this, I consider DX (and since I know someone will ask) and Evolution as a stable/faction. THIS is just tag teams. Hart Foundation, yes I know it was a stable BUT it was just Anvil and Hart before that stable was created and they were the bomb.

Missed tag teams that should be in the top ten: Midnight Express, Fabulous Freebirds. Either of there two teams should be in the top 3.
Honorable mentions: The Wild Samoans, The Sheepherders/Bushwhackers, Brainbusters/4 Horsemen.
I marked out for Demolition but they do not deserve to be up here :-)

Yes I know I put the Horsemen twice but you got to go old school for Ole and Arn Anderson when they held the AWA Tag Titles and NWA Tag Titles at the same time, NWA US Tag Champions and NWA/WCW TV TAg Champions

The only reason Chuck Norris isn't on this list is because he's only physically one person, but then again Rick Steiner had the WCW Tag Titles all by himself before, so I retract my statement and Chuck Norris should be #1 on the list.

Nice article What. And DX is a stable, not a tag team. There have been 4 incarnations, all featuring HBK and Triple H, even if just for one night. But, they often had other members in.
Only reason people think about DX as a tag is due to the latest incarnation, when they feuded with The McMahons, Then Rated RKO.

I think of DX as a tag because of the New Age Outlaws.....always thought of HHH as a singles guy, and haven't thought of HBK as a tag guy in 20 years. Just the way I see it.....but there WAS a legitimate tag team in DX.
Kow bout for honorable mention.....The Natural Disasters, Brothers of Destruction, Rock N Sock Connection, and Hollywood Blonds, for sure

Well here's my top 10 in no order!!
The outsiders DX LOD Demolition The Rocker's The Dudley's The Steiner Brothers Edge and Christian The Hart Foundation APA In my opinion rated RKO just doesn't make the cut because they wernt together long enough , that and i forgot all about them untill the other write up so yer cant have been that great :P Harlem no way always bored the hell out of me !!!! Hardy's YAWN while great in the ring they never had the pressance!!! mmm that will do for now :)

I reckon what has a pretty good selection of people in his tag teams, i'd quite like to see APA up there as well.
Although i have to say personally i'd say the Dudleyz should be number one, every major tag title in america, some in japan, and 19 major tag team titles (that might be out by a few) it's hard to argue with that, plus the amount of heat they can raise, in ring chemisty, great matches with TLC tables hardcore you name it, they've done it.

Hi, I have watched wrestling sicne I was like 6 and I wasn't around for the old school tag teams, but I reckont hat how long that Team 3D (Dudley Boys) have been together and how many tag titles they ahve captured that they should be on the top of any tag team list. my top ten (well without really thinking) 10 - Miz & Morrison (the best WWE had in the tag division until they split them up) 9 - the Steiner Brothers (Rick & Scott Steiner) 8 - London & Kendrick 7 - LAX (Hernandez & Homicide) 6 - Motor City Machine Guns 5- Hardy Boyz (Matt & Jeff Hardy) 4- Edge & Christian 3- Hart Foundation ( Bret "Hitman" Hart & Jim "the Anvil" Neidhart) 2 - Legion of Doom (Road Warrior Animal & Hawk) 1 - Team 3D aka Dudley Boys (Brother Devon & Brother Ray)

Bravo. Good list and agreeable for the most part. A time table should be given for a cut off, for I heard a lot of people citing DX and the Rockers as one of the greatest, and I can understand, if you are not old enough to appreciate true tag team wrestling. Biggest problem nowadays, WWF's tag teams consist of two big singles put together for effect, which if you look at say the 80's, the opposite was true (a la Ric Flair vs. Road Warrior Hawk, G.A.B. '87-ish, Philadelphia). Although great teams have appeared as of late (LAX) which may herald a new golden age of tag teams. My picks would be in no real order except the first:
1. Road Warriors As above, I agree they are the list. Think old arcade wrestling games. The main boss champs always were an imitation of them with the spikes and makeup. I have literally witnessed them doing a run-in, gorilla pressing one opponent out of the ring while clotheslining the other, Doomsday Devicing him, and pinning or just dominating, all in under 3 minutes. The Road Warriors were so bad -ass that they would play Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man', their theme music, as they were coming to the ring for the surprise run-in, because nobody could do anything about it. The look, the ability, the marketability (big part), the mic skills. They had it all. That's why they are number one.
2. Steiner Brothers 3. Hart Foundation 4. The Machines (Andre the Giant and the Masked Superstar) 5. The Outsiders 6. Rob Van Damn and Sabu 7. Minnesota Wrecking Crew (Ole and Arn Anderson) 8. Midnight Express 9. Fabulous Freebirds (Bam Bam Terry Gordy and I believe Michael P.S. Hayes) 10. The Dudley Boys 11. Nikita Koloff and either Ivan Koloff or Crusher Krucheff. 12. USA Express (Danny Spivey and Mike Rotundo)

gratz to all the names mentioned, they all deserved a spot on anyone's list ... but there is one tag team that hasn't been mentioned ... the MegaPowers
With the combined forces of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, along with the lovely Miss Elizabeth they could of been one of the WWF/WCW's greatest tag-team combos ever ... at least on paper it looked that way.
But, with two big egos, Hogan's inability to recognize that he was not the only talent and the mile wide jealous streak of the Macho Man, this lead to the internal destruction of the team, almost before they even began.
Over the course of the next 2 decades, the duo would form, fight, fued, and break up a number of times. Never winning a Championship, the team remains cemented in history as one of the greatest tag-teams that never was.

The fact that all of you seen to forget that wrestling actually existed before 1985 is just sad!
The fact that The Wild Samoan's are not listed proves this.
Also ignored are the Valiant brothers, Steiners, and the FREAKING FREEBIRDS!!! I could go on and on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with almost everybody else when they say the Midnight Rockers/Rockers, Miz & Morrison (They had it all, in ring skills, ability on the mic (though the live Dirt Sheet always made me sigh, much better when it was taped), and one of the great teams that you were suppose to hate, but loved to death), Demolition, before Crush got into it, The New Foundation (what actually got Owen Heart his major push in WWF/E), The Natural Disasters, and so on and so on. The problem with making top 10's is that you have to deal with the time period, right now there isn't a tag team really worth talking about. Yes, Cryme Tyme is good, but they just can't seem to get their push to go anywhere. If you go back into the '90s you'll get more tag teams then you can talk about, and the 80's were nothing to sneeze at either, and then before them and so on. Too many tag teams that did great things for the business when the singles just couldn't bring everybody in.
Though, yes, L.O.D. OOoooooh, what a rush!

ok a lot of the teams not making the list but mentioned are simply rip offs of other teams mentioned for example
midnight rockers= rock and roll express wanna bes even tough hbk became a great singleswrestler
demolition= wwe version of the road warriors and a lame version at that
altho i would add a few of my own favs terry gordy and steve willams whilie not big in the us they dominated in japan
freebirds yes there were 3 of them michael hayes, buddy roberts and terry gordy but it was usually gordy and roberts doing most of the tag team with hayes outside the ring
soof the other teams mentioned i call part time tag teams cause they were never fully tag team wrestlers for example hall and nash, brothers of destruction mysterio batista, rock and sock, rjo etc

WOW some ppl just have no clue.... and who put cryme time on a list of greatest ever? they're fun 2 whatch but seriously? mi list doesn't have evoloution on it because it was a faction.... and HHH and HBK bcuz that DX hasn't won anything..... nwo isint on here bcuz of it being a faction too. Heres a real top 10 list. (with contenders)
The contenders: Paul London and Brian Kendrick, The APA, The Worlds Greatest Tag Team, Harlem Heat, The Rock N Sock Connection
The Top 10 ever: 10.The Brothers Of Destruction:If u disagree wit me whatch a clip of them at Summerslam 2001 vs DDP and Kanyon
9.Steiner Brothers:Scott and Rick worked well enuf to be 9
8.The Hardy Boyz:sum good matches between them the dudleys and The NAO
7.The British Bulldogs:worked well enuf for 7
6.Rock N Roll Express:Morton and Gibson get #6
5.Edge and Christian:Add them in to the Hardys good match list those 4 teams created classics
4.Hart Foundation:Brett and the andvil are legends
3.The New Age Outlaws:"Oh! You Didn't Know? Your ass betta call someboddddddddddddddddaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!!!!" The NAO were DX's prize tag team while HHH and HBK r getting all ur love but not mine. These two r still together! OH you didn't know? They were the James Gang and now r the Vudoo Kin Mafia.... don't know if I spelled that right but yeah still on TNA under The names B.G. James (Road Dogg) and Kip James (Billy Gunn)
2.The Dudleys:By the Dudleys I mean D' Von and Bubba not a group type deal.... I may be a Road Dogg fan but who doesn't like hearing "D' Von get the tables!" 22 titles.... every title known 2 the U.S. whether u call them the Dudley Boyz or Team 3D they were amazing.... and still rn't bad
1.The Legion Of Doom:Okay they have a sweet name < (also Road Warriors is not bad) the DoomsDay Device.... beats out The Dudley Death Drop..... they r #1 not only bcuz of the titles they 1, and not only bcuz of the team chemistry they had, and not only bcuz THEY R TAG TEAM TRAILBLAZERS, but bcuz they were good enuf 2 split and be succesful at singles competition and they nvr did. They should b #1 on every greatest tag team evr list and if theyre not #1 on urs u nvr whatched them as a team.
