Is Sting coming to WWE?

By | 3 July 2013

According to the Wrestling Observer, TNA Hall of Famer Sting (Steve Borden) has “sent out feelers” to WWE.

The report comes at an interesting time, as WWE drew attention to Sting’s career in NWA/WCW as part of a series of vignettes on past World Hvt. champions on last Monday’s Raw.

In the event that Sting does join WWE, the thinking behind the vignettes was to position Sting – who casual WWE viewers may not be aware of – at the level of past big-name, WWE champions that casual viewers are aware of.

Sting is now operating on a year-by-year contract with TNA Wrestling, with his current contract coming due at the end of the year, which will lead to Sting making the annual decision of whether to renew, retire, or go to WWE for the first time in his career.

“I do an annual contract every year and the rumors start right around January,” Sting told VOC Nation Radio in an interview one month ago. “The year that they did the vignette (for Undertaker), I had nothing to do with it and I had no conversations with the WWE at that time. Shortly afterward there were conversations (with WWE) just by happenstance but nothing official.”

With WWE owning the vast majority of Sting’s career through their 2001 acquisition of the WCW tape library, WWE would be able to link the past to the present to introduce Sting to their general audience, should he come to WWE.

“I’ve always wanted to wrestle Undertaker; I’ve said that for years,” Sting told VOC Nation. “And who would not want to work WrestleMania?”

It should be noted that Sting turns 55 years old on March 20 – just two weeks before WrestleMania 30 in New Orleans.
