Over the last several months, the WWE has been closely monitoring the web on the nights of WWE pay-per-view shows. The reasoning is that they have been trying to crack down on illegal PPV streams all over the web. Their hope is that if free streams on the web are eliminated, people will have no way to catch it for free, forcing them to pay to watch it, thus increasing their profit. According to buyrate numbers for PPV shows before and after the crackdown, their efforts are not working. The company started their patrolling of the streams with the June PPV, The Bash. That show hauled in 178,000 buys. The previous month's show, Extreme Rules, a show that was not closely patrolled, brought in 273,000 buys.
Bottom line is, if the WWE's logic is correct regarding the shut down of the streams, buyrates for The Bash should have been higher than buyrates for Extreme Rules. But based on the sharp drop rather than increase, it looks like things aren't working out the way they had planned.

One PPV was destined to perform better than the other from the beginning. This is such a stupid news post...

the thing is Extreme Rules always Draws more buy rats then the Bash. YOu need to wait until next year to compare the same ppv before crackdown to post crackdown.

Talking about poor logic. If I understand the report Backlash should have sold more then Wrestlemania if they started to monitor the web then? Or is this just poor logic? LOL

Guys, you don't know jack about news...This is news and good news, for the matter. It clearly shows that the problem with piracy (extending it to music and films),is that corporations provide poorly designed products and what 15 years ago would sell just because there wouldn't be any other way of getting it,now it won't sell, just because of the name it bears!Products have to get better if they want good sales.I'm not endorsing piracy, but I understand those who wouldn't spent a day's salary or two, just to get a crappy product, yet there are still people who will pay for something really good!Bottom line?Corporations just don't get the right messages out of piracy.....

i agree that you cant draw conclusions from extreme rules to the bash, there will always be a possible exception, like if you compare thid years bash to next years, people could say "well this bash had a better card, so this means squat"
and there right, you can draw a conculsion, but it isnt necassarily right

The Bash being the first one they started patrolling the web for doesn't mean the buys off that ppv would go up, unless they advertised that they were going to shut down the illegal streams beforehand. It's the following ppv figures that matter. Then again, wwe ppv's are crap anyway, and perhaps people are coming to their senses and don't want to watch the same old rubbish with Cena and DX boring the pants off anyone with a mental age greater than 12.

Qualify your statistics. How was WWE's TV rates at that time - what feuds were strong at the PPV's?
